I spotted Alex and Ani’s bangle of the month when I stopped by the Bowen’s Wharf bangle boutique last week and stopped in my tracks. It’s a favorite among my friends and a lot of Newporters as the compass is synonymous with the nautical lifestyle, and now, it’s on sale. Normally $38, the bangle is $33 this month, and represents unity, balance and prosperity. One of the oldest navigational tools in history, the compass can also act as a metaphor, helping one to chart their own life’s course.

Bangle Bonaza! Alex and Ani Releases Limited Edition Bangles + August Bangle is Nautically Inspired (and $5 off)
Alex and Ani has been getting a ton of press lately, due in large part to the eco-friendly jewelry company’s sponsorship of the Newport Folk Festival and Jazz Festivals. In addition to the positive energy surrounding the Alex and Ani Harbor Stage this past weekend and the jazz musicians who will grace the stage this coming weekend, Alex and Ani Charity by Design released a Live Music bangle to honor of the Newport Festival Foundation, a limited edition Newport Folk Festival bangle that symbolizes resilience, inner strength and undying love (the charm itself was attached to entry wristbands for folk festival ticket holders).
Looking for something a little more nautical? This month’s featured bangle features an anchor charm that comes in Russian gold and Russian silver. Take $5 off the original $28 price for this Newport-inspired piece that represents tranquility and hope, and encourages safety, courage and piece of mind.
By now, Newporters and beyond have taken to Alex and Ani, which will take center stage this summer as you’ll be able to buy your Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festival tickets at the Bowen’s Wharf shop, but I’m head over heels for the July featured bangle. The 3-D crab bangle, says Alex and Ani, will remind you to trust your instincts and seek alternative routes to reach your goals. I also love it because the crab is often associated with Maryland, where I lived for years.
Best of all, the expandable bangle is $5 off the original $28 price, so it’s just $23, but this month only. The bangle is available in Russian Gold and Russian Silver while supplies last. Planning on doing a little more shopping at Alex and Ani boutiques or online? CLICK HERE for a $5 off your total purchase (restrictions apply).
Father’s Day is this Sunday, and for many, gifting dear ‘ol dad is a top priority in addition to sharing a fun-filled day to fête the big guy. With summer ahead, there’s a host of great gifts available around Newport that he’ll love and get great use out of whether on land or sea. The above picture is a smattering of fashionable finds from J. McLaughlin including their classic carry-all sail cloth duffle tote ($225), a distressed cotton belt with a skull and crossbones print ($45), a silk jacquard fabric belt ($55), and a pair of silk jacquard dopp kits (perfect for traveling dads, $68).
Think Alex and Ani owner and designer Carolyn Rafaelian only creates for women? Think again. The Miracle Necklace, a Father’s Day exclusive, features a medal of St. Christopher for protection paired with the Italian Horn that the company calls “a powerful amulet representing luck.” The original price is $98 but it’s on sale for $78 (online only, so if you need to ship a gift, done and done).
I also think the Newport Shipyard custom Thomas Bates 1-1/2″ reversible nylon strap belt from Newport Shipyard Outfitters ($24) is a fun find, and uniquely Newport–kind of apropos as Father’s Day is wedged in between the J Class Regatta this week and Bacardi Newport Sailing Week coming next week. And if dad is a denim dude, Laura Jean is offering 10% off purchases for pop now through June 19.
I just wrote about Alex and Ani last week, but today I’m putting the eco-conscious jewelry line back in the spotlight as the team behind the original expandable bangle and bangle bar has debuted a black obsidian bangle to support relief efforts in Japan. This bangle has been specifically designed to support relief of the recent disasters in Japan utilizing Alex and Ani’s Charity By Design process. With charms promoting healing protection and peace, the piece is available in a Russian Gold or Russian Silver finish, and is adorned with a black obsidian stone which is said help to ward off negative energy and keep thoughts positive. Together, Alex and Ani and Spreehive, Rhode Island’s local answer to Groupon, will be donating a portion of proceeds from the sale of the Obsidian Bangles to the Red Cross. In lieu of the regular $38 price, the bangle is just $19. Purchase through Spreehive.com and either pick up at Alex and Ani retail stores, including Newport’s Bowen’s Wharf locations, or order through the website if you do not live near any of the four retail stores.
The special offer is available for the next few days. Click here for information and to order.
Alex and Ani made headlines this week when it was announced the Rhode Island-based company will sponsor the Harbor Stage at Fort Adams State Park at the Newport Folk Festival on July 30-31 and at the Newport Jazz Festival on August 6-7. It’s the first time in the history of the Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festival one corporation will be a sponsor at both events.
If you’re a regular Stylephile reader, you’re no stranger to Alex and Ani, the celebrity-loved collection by owner, designer and Rhode Island native Carolyn Rafaelian. Alex and Ani was born out of Carolyn’s ethos to create eco-friendly pieces that enlighten the mind and empower the spirit—and pieces that are just plain fun and whimsical (read my anniversary post about the Newport Alex and Ani by clicking here).
Tomorrow is Newport’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and if you haven’t been, it’s the City’s unofficial coming out party, a time when whether or not Mother Nature agrees, we toast Newport’s Irish heritage (and our own, as the case may be) while looking toward the promise of spring. There’s a ton of festive swag to commemorate the celebration, but I’d love to sport some of the great Alex and Ani bangles above—a great four leaf clover, pot of gold, horse shoe or Good Luck charm on their signature expandable bangles. (I’m partial to the Russian Gold, but they also come in Russian silver.) Plus they’re inexpensive, starting at $21, and you can progressively add more to create a fabulous collection of stackables. I wonder if any of Alex and Ani’s celeb fans, like Christy Turlington, Katherine McPhee, Miley Cyrus, Shakira, Ashlee Simpson (and Real Housewives Bethenny Frankel, Taylor Armstrong and Teresa Giudice) have any of these specific pieces to bring them a little lock of the Irish??? Happy shopping!
