Loving these new Greek key bracelets from Sequin in Newport! Bright, bold, and virtually indestructible, these eye-catching arm candies come in baby blue (favorite!), royal blue, hot pink, orange, green, white, silver, gold, royal blue, neon yellow, lime—15 fabulous colors in all, retailing for $25 each. Sequin’s work has been featured in Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Town and Country, In Style, Lucky, and Elle, and designers/sisters Kim and Linda Renk have lent their skills to globally-adored lines including Badgley Mischka, Ralph Lauren, J. Mendel, Henri Bendel, Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus.
We’re lucky to have a trio of Sequin locations here in Newport* (in addition to the Palm Beach and Chicago boutiques):
119 Bellevue Ave., (401) 619-5713
182 Bellevue Ave., (401) 619-5685

With the much anticipated snow on the ground, it seems there is no better time to indulge in the trend of rocking a Nordic sweater (also known as Icelandic, Fair Isle, snowflake or ski sweaters). From J. Crew, Abercrombie & Fitch, Christian Dior and Marc Jacobs to Land’s End, Ralph Lauren and even tween retailers like Forever 21, these warm wool wonders for men and women can be found nearly everywhere and have been in style on an off for decades. Case in point: Dale of Norway, the real deal, has been knitting them since 1879. Of course, if you (or a family member) subscribes to the philosophy that everything comes back in style at one point or another, there’s probably one in your closet that is good to go, with a little TLC (and if so, chances are its L.L. Bean). I found a great one, and spotted more (and similar themed legwarmers…) at Closet Revival on Broadway recently. Consignment shops are a great place to find them at a good price.
Seen on celebs including Drew Barrymore, Taylor Swift, Victoria Beckham and more, they may be best known as the quintessential après ski fashion. Paired with a skinny jean or legging with boots, it’s a fabulous wintry look. Personally, I prefer traditional snowflake or astrid patterns over the geometric or check ones, but they’re outstanding either way.

Is that Lilly Pulitzer? On clearance? It was instead, Ann Taylor, but it was equally lovely and a bargain at $10. I found this little dirt cheap gem at the newly opened Labels for Less in Middletown (next to Custom House Coffee on Aquidneck Avenue). The shop (formerly known at Sportswear, etc.) relocated from Portsmouth and has some great staples (khakis for him, comfy sweats, t-shirts, jeans) from brands including Ralph Lauren, J. Jill, Eddie Bauer, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, Woolrich and more.
Considering the forecast, the women’s water resistant New Englander Rain Jacket by Charles River (at right) might come in handy for just $49.99 (x-small—3XL), and it comes in toddler and youth sizes as well for $29.99.
Loved the men’s flat front (thank God!) Ralph Lauren Polo Chino in khaki, stone and navy (sz. 34-42) for just $28 and the men’s Woolrich 3x dry cotton dobby long-sleeve shirt (water repellent, quick dry, stain resistant…virtually indestructible) for $29.99. Prices are already low, and right now you’ll find steeper discounts as part of the end of summer clearance!
With Monday’s observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Newporters are looking forward to the 3-day weekend which may include sledding, ice skating on Lily Pond or at the Skating Center, or toasting our winter wonderland with a piping hot Irish Coffee (would love to know YOUR favorite Irish Coffee around town). Fresh of the Christmas holiday rush, area retailers are anxious to move inventory to make room for spring (oh, doesn’t spring sound fabulous right now?) Here’s the scoop:
Wish (664 Thames Street) is slashing prices with 20%, 30% and 50% of select styles, and they have a ton of labels to tout: Marc Jacobs, DVF, Burberry, Free People, Prada, and Coach as well as designer denim as low as $25! Sale is today through Sunday…
The Linen Shop (196 Bellevue Avenue): There’s just something about starting off the new year with fresh linens…and here’s great news. THE ENTIRE SHOP is 20% off and there’s a special sale table with goods marked down up to 70%. If you’ve never been, you should stop by there, just to take in the history of it’s location and get a sense of what fine linens are all about. Owner Meg McGuire is always a gracious host and knows just about everything there is to know about bath and linen lines. Here you’ll find pieces by Abyss, Matouk, Yves Delorme and more.
Michael Hayes (202 Bellevue Avenue and 19 Bowen’s Wharf) Designer Sale is in full swing with, and I love this, 20% off already marked down clearance goods.
Cottage & Garden (9 Bridge Street) is putting all topiaries on sale tomorrow (Saturday), so here’s your chance to welcome a little living, breathing freshness to your home.
Banana Republic in Washington Square (124 Thames Street) has a lot of great items on sale. Let me just tell you—I stopped in last night just to see if there might be a piece for me to wear this coming Monday in The Rhode Show (I’ll be dishing on my Golden Globes best dressed and hot messes!) and was torn between two great dresses. I bring them both to the register (including the one pictured here). The silk v-neck drape dress in grey was originally $150, had been marked down to $129, then $109, then $79, then $54.99. THEN I spot a sign—items are AN ADDITIONAL 40% off—hello, my new $32.99 dress. Oh, and the little black number I was mulling over too? $150 to $109 to $59.99 to hanging in my closet for $35.99!!!
If you’re looking to get gorg, Ki-Ra Salon (6 West Marlborough Street) is celebrating their annual Pay It Forward Sale—bring in a bag of non-perishables or personal hygiene products and receive 30% off all services (over $15) and all retail products (some restrictions apply), now through February 12…
Mommies take note: Infant Interiors (8 Freebody Street, # 1) by lovely cover girl Roselle McConnell is having their Once in a Blue Moon sale with 30%-50% off floor models including bedding, dressers, lamps, chandeliers, Moses baskets (love to give Moses baskets as gifts!), window treatments, rugs and art, now through Jan. 31.
A little something for the men (and women), The Narragansett on Bowen’s Wharf (3 Bowen’s Wharf) is hosting their annual Winter Clearance Sale…my husband picked up some great Polo Ralph Lauren pieces there during their last sale. Includes 50-70% off on Paul & Shark, Geiger, Viyella, Rainforest, Max Mara, Faconnable and more. (Polo Ralph Lauren sweater pictured may not be available)
Looks like everyone survived the “snowpocalypse” that arrived yesterday! With round-the-clock plowing and some old-fashioned elbow grease, a majority of the retail areas around Bristol and Newport counties will be opening at regular times.
Snow or no snow, Kristina Richards Studio in Newport’s Washington Square kicks off a big sale today featuring JBrand and other denim for $50, cashmere for $75, Vix Swimwear for $50 (hello, Florida-bound), Free People for $25 and other stylish finds marked down to a mere $20, $30 and $40. This means you’ll be finding some of the hottest lines at up to 75% off! Sale starts today and lasts through Monday.
The Linen Shop is hosting their White Sale, where crisp white linens including sheet sets, pillows and shams, bath sets and towels are marked down significantly.
Also, the 22nd Annual Newport Winter Festival begins on Friday and lasts for 10 fun-filled days. (First timers should check out my article that explains it all in the Jan. 17 edition of the Hartford Courant- click here to check it out.) Many area retailers are offering a Newport Winter Festival discount, usually from 15% to 20%, with a festival button including Cosmetic Cosmos, Bailey T’s, Beach Party, The Black Dog, Brahmin, Frazzleberries, Jason & Co., Karma, Laura Jean, Pan Handler’s, Wag Nation and more. (Click here for a full listing of button discounts.)
Event highlights this weekend include Friday evening’s Beatlemania concert, Saturday’s 15th Annual Chili Cook-Off, a city-wide Scavenger Hunt (believe it or not, very competitive and a great way to get to know the city), and by nightfall, the comedy show at the Hotel Viking featuring Comedy Central darlings Tony V. and Jimmy Dunn. For the first time ever, Newport International Polo will be hosting a match on Middletown’s Second Beach (Sat. and Sun., free). What to wear to an oceanside polo match? Dress for function more than fashion. You would think it goes without saying, but no heels (spotted a handful of ladies with heels or heeled boots at the Polar Bear Plunge– it wasn’t working). And at some point during the festival, check out the WINEterfest Wine Tasting & Outside Ice Wine Bar at Newport Vineyards, where you’ll find taste various vineyard vintages as well as cheeses, chocolates and spreadable edibles offered from local gourmet purveyors. For those who don’t have the luxury of jetting off to warmer temps right now, you can get a taste of island living at Sunday night’s Tropical Drink Contest at the Gas Lamp Grille.
Parents should make it a point to bring their little ones to Saturday’s Toe Jam Puppet Band concert and/or Sunday and Monday’s Children’s Fair at the Newport Marriott. The Stylephile will be highlighting events throughout the festival, but you should head to the Newport & Bristol Counties Convention & Visitor’s Bureau (33 America’s Cup Avenue, Newport) for a brochure with all the events or check out the day-by-day calendar at www.NewportWinterFestival.com.
This weekend also kicks off the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver and the American athletes will be sporting some fashionable duds for the opening ceremony by Ralph Lauren (the shawl cardigan and opening ceremonies knit hat are must-haves). Tune in to NBC-10 for all the snowboarding, skiing, ice skating and winter games you can handle (set your DVRs now so you don’t miss a beat while at the Newport Winter Festival).
