Get Your Nordic Sweater On (No, Really, You Can Put it On…)
With the much anticipated snow on the ground, it seems there is no better time to indulge in the trend of rocking a Nordic sweater (also known as Icelandic, Fair Isle, snowflake or ski sweaters). From J. Crew, Abercrombie & Fitch, Christian Dior and Marc Jacobs to Land’s End, Ralph Lauren and even tween retailers like Forever 21, these warm wool wonders for men and women can be found nearly everywhere and have been in style on an off for decades. Case in point: Dale of Norway, the real deal, has been knitting them since 1879. Of course, if you (or a family member) subscribes to the philosophy that everything comes back in style at one point or another, there’s probably one in your closet that 
is good to go, with a little TLC (and if so, chances are its L.L. Bean). I found a great one, and spotted more (and similar themed legwarmers…) at Closet Revival on Broadway recently. Consignment shops are a great place to find them at a good price.
Seen on celebs including Drew Barrymore, Taylor Swift, Victoria Beckham and more, they may be best known as the quintessential après ski fashion. Paired with a skinny jean or legging with boots, it’s a fabulous wintry look. Personally, I prefer traditional snowflake or astrid patterns over the geometric or check ones, but they’re outstanding either way.

Labels for Less Opens in Middletown
Is that Lilly Pulitzer? On clearance? It was instead, Ann Taylor, but it was equally lovely and a bargain at $10. I found this little dirt cheap gem at the newly opened Labels for Less in Middletown (next to Custom House Coffee on Aquidneck Avenue). The shop (formerly known at Sportswear, etc.) relocated from Portsmouth 
and has some great staples (khakis for him, comfy sweats, t-shirts, jeans) from brands including Ralph Lauren, J. Jill, Eddie Bauer, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, Woolrich and more.
Considering the forecast, the women’s water resistant New Englander Rain Jacket by Charles River (at right) might come in handy for just $49.99 (x-small—3XL), and it comes in toddler and youth sizes as well for $29.99.

With Monday’s observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Newporters are looking forward to the 3-day weekend which may include sledding, ice skating on Lily Pond or at the Skating Center, or toasting our winter wonderland with a piping hot Irish Coffee (would love to know YOUR favorite Irish Coffee around town). Banana Republic in Washington Square (124 Thames Street) has a lot of great items on sale. Let me just tell you—I stopped in last night just to see if there might be a piece for me to wear this coming Monday in The Rhode Show (I’ll be dishing on my Golden Globes best dressed and hot messes!) and was torn between two great dresses. I bring them both to the register (including the one pictured here). The silk v-neck drape dress in grey was originally $150, had been marked down to $129, then $109, then $79, then $54.99. THEN I spot a sign—items are AN ADDITIONAL 40% off—hello, my new $32.99 dress. Oh, and the little black number I was mulling over too? $150 to $109 to $59.99 to hanging in my closet for $35.99!!!

Deals & Steals: Come Snow or High Water Edition
Looks like everyone survived the “snowpocalypse” that arrived yesterday! With round-the-clock plowing and some old-fashioned elbow grease, a majority of the retail areas around Bristol and Newport counties will be opening at regular times.
Snow or no snow, Kristina Richards Studio in Newport’s Washington Square kicks off a big sale today featuring JBrand and other denim for $50, cashmere for $75, Vix Swimwear for $50 (hello, Florida-bound), Free People for $25 and other stylish finds marked down to a mere $20, $30 and $40. This means you’ll be finding some of the hottest lines at up to 75% off! Sale starts today and lasts through Monday.

For the first time ever, Newport International Polo will be hosting a match on Middletown’s Second Beach (Sat. and Sun., free). What to wear to an oceanside polo match? Dress for function more than fashion. You would think it goes without saying, but no heels (spotted a handful of ladies with heels or heeled boots at the Polar Bear Plunge– it wasn’t 
working). This weekend also kicks off the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver and the American
