While tens of thousands of visitors flock to Newport to feast their eyes upon the famed “summer cottages” of America’s wealthiest industrial barons, many hope to take a piece of history home with them. The Newport Mansions Stores satisfies even the most discerning shopper’s taste proffering a wide variety of gifts, books, decorative accessories, jewelry, gardening items, historic reproductions and even charming finds for little ones. Savvy shoppers, however, mark their calendars for the few and far between sales like the one that takes place this Friday and Saturday at the stores’ Third Street warehouse where you’ll find 50% to 75% off retail prices. Tasteful treasures for yourself or thoughtful gifts for others “inspired by 250 years of European and American craftsmanship,” pepper the museum-like stores that “capture the timeless elegance and romance of some of America’s greatest houses.” Proceeds benefit the Preservation Society of Newport County, a non-profit organization that restores, preserves and protects the 11 properties that represent the best of Newport County’s architectural heritage.
