New to Newport (sorta): The Finer Consigner

There’s already a Middletown location, but The Finer Consigner is opening their second shop in downtown Newport Friday, Nov. 27th (very appropriate as it is the biggest shopping day of the year)  featuring pre-owned fine furnishings, household accessories, decorative accents, a wide array of estate jewelry and a few select clothing items. Among the threads you’ll find top of the line men’s suits by Pendleton starting at just $99.

Re-inventing the space that once was the Everyday Gourmet, The Finer Consigner is welcome addition to the Thames Street shops with nearby neighbors including Wish and Thames Street Glass. With inventory changing almost daily (one of the beauties of resale shops), The Finer Consigner is the perfect place to visit before attempting a recession-friendly redecoration, to find an affordable accent, or bring an authentic piece of Newport home with you. Check out the ever changing treasures at The Finer Consigner at 677 Thames Street or at their original Middletown location at 72 East Main Road (across from Christmas Tree Shops).

Bienvenue Le Petit Gourmet!

Grand Opening Celebration today! Come one, come all and sample treats for your holiday and everyday!

The Newport Wine Cellar’s David and Maria Glade eagerly announce the perfect pairing for their already admired wine shop: a specialty food and artisanal cheese headquarters right next door. Le Petit Gourmet will offer a wide variety of imported and domestic artisanal cheeses, high quality dry goods, cured meats and olives, fresh breads, and simple prepared meals to-go, in addition to some hard to find regional specialties from all wine growing regions—all things from earth and vine. “We want to provide excellent quality and value—great food and wine at reasonable prices in a friendly and educational environment,” say the couple, who have already mastered the art of stocking lesser-known varietals.

A welcome addition to Historic Hill, directly across from the Hotel Viking, Le Petit Gourmet will have complimentary weekly tastings, wine classes on Wednesdays, monthly cheese dinners, wine and cheese of the month club, and an introduction to some new adventures in food and wine.

“Our philosophy is to keep it simple, affordable and fun, so just come in and chat with us,” say the Glades. “Relax, it’s just food and wine—you are supposed to enjoy yourself!”

Newport Wine Cellar & Le Petit Gourmet is located at 24-26 Bellevue Avenue and is open 11:30-7pm daily; 12pm-5 on Sunday. There is available parking in the rear of the building.

Stars in our Backyard: Handbag Couturier Marcela Calvet

Capucine“I was born in the beautiful and stylish city of Buenos Aires, but because I had the great fortune of having traveled since childhood, I consider myself a citizen of the world,” says renowned designer Marcela Calvet. “I spend most of the year here in Newport, a city that I find so charming for so many reasons.” The designer’s eponymously named handbag label is well-established in the luxury goods coterie, sold exclusively at her Newport showroom, her Buenos Aires atelier and online on her web site.

Calvet is much more concerned about quality than she is quantity. “Our collections are produced in limited-editions for two reasons: 1) to maintain the exclusivity of our  label and designs; and 2) because our  handbags are hand-made,” she explains. ” The latter requires a great level of expert artisanship and precision, making it a time consuming endeavor.”

The designer fashioned her first creation at age nine and hasn’t looked back since. “I do not think one becomes a designer but rather you are born one. Possessing a keen eye for color, texture, a sense of aesthetics and style, are the main attributes of a designer.” But why handbags? Calvet claims where the handbag was once “merely the complement to couture ensemble,” today is the centerpiece. Inspired by beauty found in nature, in a song, a painting, a poem, a child’s smile, in love and in life, Calvet eschews trends and embraces her creative spirit. While the world may know her, Newport County is proud to call Calvet our own.

Bags shown here: above, left: Capucine / at right: Corinne; both from Calvet’s most recent collection entitled Ariege.

View the collection online at www.marcelacalvet.com or in person by private appointment in her Bellevue Avenue showroom by calling: 401-207-5309.
