Shop Shot: Destination Chocolate

December 8, 2009 at 10:39 am 2 comments

Where: Newport’s Bowen’s Wharf

Why: In the panic of what to get the person who has everything this holiday season, you’d be hard pressed to find an unenthusiastic recipient of a beautifully wrapped, heavenly scented, thoughtful box of rich, handcrafted chocolates. Destination Chocolate on Bowen’s Wharf from the outside is reminiscent of a Parisian storefront with a bistro table for two outside and elegantly displayed confections in the window. Inside, the charming chocolatier emits a sugary scent of sweet delight. From truffles to turtles, creams to caramels, nuts to nonpareils, there’s something for just about everyone in this enchanting shop.

Destination Chocolate is open daily and located at  15 Bowen’s Wharf in Newport and can be reached at (401) 847-1223. Visit them online at

Picture this; a recently engaged, happy couple pausing to capture a photo sitting, holding hands on two chairs along Bowen’s Wharf.
A sweet & innocent moment right? It could have been a lovely memory, but we made the mistake of sitting on the shop owner’s “private property” (also known as a chair on the outside of her shop) to take a picture. Last time I checked Bowen’s Wharf is public property. The shop owner was so crazy she demanded I come inside her store and buy chocolates now that I’d taken a photo sitting in her silly chair. She actually felt such entitlement that she did not ask me to come inside but stated “you will come inside and buy chocolates now”. I honestly could not believe this wealthy Newport shop owner wanted monetary compensation for our photo! Obviously she’s a woman with plenty of money in the bank, but lacks class, kindness, and genuine human emotion. Cold as ICE! Stay away from whatever chocolates she’s sell or eating!!!

      Hi Madalyn,

I’m truly sorry to hear of your negative experience here with one of our shopkeepers. Please don’t let someone else taint this momentous and beautiful occasion for your and your new (gasp!) fiance. We hope that you both come back and enjoy all Newport has to offer!
