Earth Day Edition: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle at Be Green Sale

Like many moms with little ones, Alison Murphy looked around one day and was overwhelmed by the amount of stuff she had acquired since her year-and-a-half old daughter, Avery, was born. Beautiful but unworn clothing, strollers, a crib, and the toys, oh, the toys … it was easy to feel cramped in her two-bedroom condominium in Newport. She brought Avery’s gently used items that she had simply outgrown or had duplicates of to a weekend-long consignment sale in Boston, priced it, dropped it off, and two weeks later, received a check for $400. Taking a cue from the win-win experience, Alison teamed up with her sister-in-law, Meredith Brown, to create Be Green Kids Consignments, a seasonal consignment event, holding their first sale at the Fraternal Order of Police Hall in Middletown, May 13-16.

The project was a no-brainer for the event planner, who is currently adding area consignors to the growing roster of area families participating in the Be Green sale. Consignors register at (there is a $10 registration fee), gather the items they want to sell, enter the items into Be Green’s on-line ticketing system (consignors decide what price to sell the item for), then they drop the items off at the FOP hall, which will be set up like a retail store, on May 12thBe Green and a team of volunteers will do all the on-site selling. “Consignors receive 60% of their proceeds, but they can volunteer and increase their percentage to 75%,” Murphy explains. Any unsold items that consignors chose to donate will be given to Child & Family Services.

Buyers, meanwhile, can find everything from strollers, high-chairs, bouncy seats, car seats and activity centers to upscale clothing, toys, books and more at up to 70% off retail prices. Be Green is also hosting a “Due & New VIP Shopping Event” Friday evening, May 14th, open to parents expecting their first child or new parents with a child under one year of age. “We are really trying to make this is a special event,” she says, adding that attendance will be limited and guests will receive a goody bag and be eligible for door prizes throughout the night.
