The America’s Cup trophy is the oldest trophy for international competition in any sport, and makes it’s triumphant return to Newport today much to the delight of sailing enthusiasts across the country. The 35-pound, sterling silver beauty, one of if not the most iconic in global sport, remained under the watchful eye of the New York Yacht Club Cup for 132-years, until the cup was lost in 1983 to Australia II.
The trophy will be available during four public showings between downtown Newport and Fort Adams State Park throughout the day, and viewing is free of charge. Parking will be available at the Newport Gateway Transportation and Visitors Center, and water taxis will be available to take visitors to Fort Adams.
