The Newport Jazz Festival kicks off with little bit pop, a dash of rock n’ roll, and a whole lotta jazz courtesy of the utterly swoon-worthy Jamie Cullum. But before the British impresario tickles the ivories at the Tennis Hall of Fame (with eighteen-year-old Grace Kelly saxaphone phenom opening) onFriday evening, Aug. 6th, concert-goers can enjoy the traditional Opening Night Cocktail Party held on the historic Horseshoe Piazza from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. The $50 ticket ($40 for THOF members) includes an open bar and court-side canapés. Maybe it’s his UK swagger, his tousled, unkempt, anti-Bieber locks, or the way he gives a Cole Porter tune its due, but there’s no question Cullum is a coup for this opening night to-do. While the weekend’s performers promise a memorable festival for fans, there’s something just more intimate at the Hall of Fame, just a stone’s throw from one of the original festival sites. So sit back, enjoy a sidecar or another classic cocktail, and be grateful for the talent that graces Newport year in and year out.
