While at the Aquidneck Growers’ Market at Newport Vineyards Saturday, I couldn’t help but notice how the rows and rows of grapes were perfectly ripened, wholly plump, and utterly robust, which naturally made me think of the fine wine its is sure to yield down the line. Of course, vine to wine is a lengthy process, but in the interim, reds are taking center stage as the temperatures drop and fall takes hold.
Savoring the season’s best flavors can be enjoyed at any of the area vineyards (Newport, Greenvale and Sakonnet), and at tastings around town. The Newport Wine Cellar is celebrating the season by presenting tasting sessions highlighting a selection of earthy, bold reds. Classes include Aromas of Spain on October 6, and Red Zinfandel–California’s Varietal, on October 13. Each feature four wines paired with cheeses and light hors d’oeuvres, and cost is $35 (they’ve been routinely selling out, so reservations are strongly encouraged. Call 619-3966 or email newportwinecellar@cox.net to reserve a spot).
