As if there weren’t enough incentives to shop locally: supporting local merchants and your community, barely any traffic (have you been on Rt. 2 in Warwick during the holidays?!? Hours of your life you’ll never get back…) and the charm of unique gifts and personal service are just a few, but now, there’s another. This Holiday season, the Newport and Bristol Convention & Visitors Bureau has created a new shopping campaign called Hometown Holiday Shopping.
Shop throughout the nine townships: Barrington, Bristol, Jamestown, Little Compton, Middletown, Newport, Portsmouth, Tiverton, and Warren, now through Friday, December 17, and anyone who spends $100 or more in a shop, restaurant, and or at an attraction (Newport Mansions, Blithewold, etc.), from any small, local business in any one of the townships listed above and receive a special complimentary gift and be eligible to enter to win a $1,000 American Express gift card.
Simply show your sales receipt of $100 or more at one of the following redemption sites:
Newport: The Newport Visitor Information Center at 23 America’s Cup Avenue in Newport, open daily, Sunday-Saturday 9-4 p.m.
Bristol: Paper Packaging & Panache, at 418 Hope Street in Bristol, Monday – Saturday 10-5 p.m.
The winner will be drawn on Friday, December 17, at 4 p.m. at Active Sole, located on Bowen’s Wharf, and you don’t need to be present to win!
ALSO, the merchants at Newport’s Brick Market Place have unveiled Brick Market Bucks: Spend $50 or more at any participating Brick Market Place store and receive $10 in Brick Market Bucks. You can spend the Bucks at any store you like and every Brick Market Place store is participating (except one!).
After shopping downtown, mosey on over to Newport’s Annual Holiday Harbor Lights Illuminated Boat Parade and Blessing of the Fleet (weather permitting), starting at 6:15 p.m. and visible from the harbor front. Boats gather at the Goat Island causeway and begin the parade at the Newport Yacht Club (which is open to the public tonight), then sail towards downtown continuing to King Park. Bowen’s and Bannister’s Wharf should be good viewing points, especially with warm hot cocoa from The Coffee Grinder or People’s Café in hand, or sip a fine wine surrounded by the warmth and elegance of 41 North where the Oval Bar and Pavilion Bar offer great views.
SHOULD THE WEATHER BE QUESTIONABLE, CALL THE HARBORMASTER LINE AT 845-5815.

Tomorrow we’ll be unveiling our Second Annual Black Friday post featuring local Black Friday bargains, but today we’re bringing attention to Small Business Saturday, a nationwide movement aimed at driving shoppers back into their local communities following the biggest retail shopping day of the year (and the official kick-off to the Christmas shoppingpalooza). Small Business Saturday is supported by American Express (btw, I’m still waiting on my own personal black card, AmEx…), which is hoping to brand the event like “Black Friday” and “Cyber-Monday” have done successfully. According to Texas-based research firm Civic Economics, every $100 spent at a local store translates into $68 for the surrounding community–that compares with only $43 when you shop at a chain store.
Here’s how it works: REGISTER HERE, then use your registered AmEx to shop at participating small businesses this Saturday and you’ll receive a $25 statement credit when you spend $25 or more at participating small businesses enrollment is limited). An added bonus? For every “like” Small Business Saturday gets on their Facebook page (facebook.com/smallbusinesssaturday), AmEx has pledged to donate $1 (up to $500,000) to Girls Inc. to help girls learn about entrepreneurship.
A slew of local businesses in Newport are participating and promoting the event, including Laura Jean Denim Shop, The Linen Shop, Lou Lou’s Décor in Portsmouth’s Clock Tower Square, The Nutcracker Suite Christmas Shop on Touro Street, Life Is Good on Thames Street, Infant Interiors and a ton more (we’ll be adding more to this list up through Saturday…).
I can’t vouch for the new musical Burlesque starring Cher and Christina Aguilera, set to be released this Wednesday (though I venture it must be better than the infamous Mariah Carey massacre, Glitter), but I can
confirm that the film hits a high note with over the top styling, including jewelry by Rhode Island’s own Cheap Wholesale Jewelry (no, seriously, that’s the company’s name … the Ocean State is the jewelry capital of the U.S., after all). Inspired by the movie, OPI nail lacquers has released a Burlesque line featuring a dozen shades of red, rust and shimmers in warm metallics, available at Ki-Ra Salon. Manicure mavens who already addicted to OPI‘s vampy varnish can vouch for the fab names of shades, and the Burlesque line doesn’t disappoint: Rising Star, Glow Up Already!, Take the Stage, The Show Must Go On, Sparkle-icious, Bring on the Bling, and my favorite, Tease-y Does It, to name a few. A selection of Burlesque OPI nail lacquers are available at Ki-Ra in Newport (and the glittery shades are perfect for holiday parties).
We’ll deal with Black Friday next week, but right now, retailers are warming up with some great sales in advance of next week’s Thanksgiving.
Kristina Richards Studio’s Clearance Sale starts today and will run through Nov. 27, but I’d advise going sooner rather than later to get the biggest steals on the major markdowns. Newporter Mary Haite, most recently known for her very much missed American Beauty boutique, has returned to her fashion roots representing Etcetera, a luxury clothing trunk show line for women. Haite has enjoyed a solid Etcetera customer base for five years but is widening the line’s availability by opening a pop-up shop next week at 78 Thames Street (former home to Gifted, before that, Rue de France – hey, this is how most directions are offered in Newport!). The high-end direct clothing sales approach is a nationwide trend seen with many upscale brands, and Haite said Etcetera’s appeal is in the line’s look and fit. “The are flattering pieces shaped for women—everything is seamed and darted,” she explains. “They’re the type pieces that when you wear them, women ask ‘Where did you get that?’”
Haite says the majority of her clients prefer to book an appointment so they can have a one-on-one (or small group) private shopping experience, though she plans on having the pop-up’s doors open to the public roughly 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. for the shop’s10-day run. Shoppers then order whatever they like and pieces are shipped to them directly. We’ll update readers on the exact days Etcetera will be open. (Appointments can be made via Mary at 256-2594).
Tomorrow we’ll be featuring another holiday season pop-up shop. Stay tuned…
