I was delighted to be on The Rhode Show this morning to talk about I think may be my favorite piece of clothing—dresses! This time of year, the social calendar fills up quickly with weddings, showers, benefits, balls and good old fashioned parties, and you need something to wear to each.
I adore this flirty and vibrant Shoshanna cocktail dress from Kristina Richards Studio (Newport and Cranston, $342) worn this morning by Charlotte S. Its silhouette flatters an hourglass shape with the gathered bodice, fitted natural waist and full skirt. The sweetheart neckline is so feminine but the all-over green and white Ikat print is decidedly modern—its all the rage this season. This piece can be dressed up for a summer wedding or gala, like the Newport Flower Show Preview Party tomorrow night, or dressed down with flats for a bridal shower or night out on the town.
The stunning Carmen Marc Valvo bandage-style dress from Michael Hayes (Newport, on Bellevue and Bowen’s Wharf, $765) at right worn on The Rhode Show by Stacie W. proves that formal doesn’t have to mean floor length. The shape is simple but the metallic finish, jeweled detailing at neck and body-hugging fit are anything but.
The brocade gold and cream knee-length dart dress I wore from Isoude by Katie Brierley (Newport, $1480) is another example of a look that can be dress up, thanks to the metallic detail and exquisite workmanship paired with a pair of shimmering or nude heels, or dressed down with simple footwear and unfussy jewelry. As you can see from the picture at the left, the dress took center stage at the Bellevue Avenue boutique recently!
The idea, as with any fashion, is to be inspired by it, and to see how these looks can be merged with your own personal sense of style and point of view. Most of all, make it fun…
