Acclaimed Newport-based fashion designer Kate Brierley has won rave reviews for her Isoude collections featuring exquisitely tailored pieces crafted with some of the richest fabrics sourced around the globe, and the designer’s newly-introduced Wedding Collection is no exception. I had the opportunity to get up close with the intimate collection at the Bellevue Avenue studio recently, and its clearly designed with the sophisticated bride in mind. “Everything I do seems to come from a very organic place,” says Kate, who recently tied the knot herself. With each dress, the designer noted an ideal milieu it would complement, from a swanky affair at The Breakers, Newport’s grande dame of the mansions, to a simple ceremony by the sea.
Layers of silk Georgette festooned with crystal beading hand-sewn in Italy, ivory silk-gazar, imported silk satin face organza, silk wool—one stunning fabric after another graced each distinct piece. “To me this is quintessential Newport,” remarked Kate about one gown she described as “very Grace Kelly” made of extremely fine double face satin organza, demi-box pleats at the drop waist and jaw-dropping crystal straps. “I want to bring to back to the body,” she says about the various silhouettes.
Dresses can be customized with detailed belts, and Kate was showing some looks with stunning headpieces by acclaimed milliner Satya Twena.
Simple and modern meets Old Hollywood throughout the must see collection, inspiring any discerning bride say, “I do.”
Isoude is located at 142 Bellevue Avenue in Newport.

Rumors quickly swirled a few months ago that OSCAR winning screen siren Charlize Theron was in Newport for a photo shoot. Indeed the South African stunner was in the City-by-the-Sea, albeit for just a few hours, and was shot by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz. While the crew shot for the recently released December of issue of Vogue in both Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, the winning cover shot is from right here in Newport. When I heard The Andover Shop was expanding to Newport recently, I did a double-take. “THE Andover Shop?!” I exclaimed. It’s true. Legendary menswear maestro Charlie Davidson opened the original shop (in Andover, Mass.) in 1948, then one in Cambridge, and there have been locations in Palm Beach and other spots in Boston. Now, Newport (through the end of the year, that is).
Davidson has had a summer home here in Newport since the 70s, and daughter Casey moved here with her husband Larry Farley in September. “We were talking to Charlie about his business and he mentioned he had some inventory he’d like to sell at discount,” says Casey. “He wanted to move out the old to make way for newer things.” So, she and Larry conceptualized a pop-up shop and moved quickly to secure the correct permits and location at 99 Spring Street. “It is The Andover Shop‘s first pop up although the store has a long history of doing trunk shows around the country,” adds Casey.
Before reading any further, you should know everything in the store is 50% off original prices. That means, classic tweed sport coats made in the USA exclusively for The Andover Shop of fabric from Scotland and Ireland, suits (mostly summer weight wool), trousers made from whip cord, thin and wide whale corduroy, gabardine wool, seersucker, madras and cavalry twill, a few overcoats, scarves, belts and bathing suits. “We have wildly colored cotton shorts, hosiery, silk and wool neck ties and bow ties, a range of sweaters, although most are cotton as we’ve sold out of the wool ones,” says Casey. “And we have beautiful shirts. Our dress shirts are like those you might see at Brooks Brothers but we also have more casual plaid and striped shirts in fun, non traditional colors and some cotton golf shirts. Though limited on sizes, Casey says the shop will try and accommodate all shoppers. The outlet also gets new things in from the two Andover Shops on a regular basis. “We encourage men who appreciate fine clothes to set aside some time and come in to try on as much as possible. I can pretty much guarantee they’ll find something to love.”
Of course, there’s one longtime colorful character loved in Newport who has long touted the talented tailor…click MORE below to find out. In the meantime, The Andover Shop Outlet at 99 Spring Street in Newport is open daily, 10:30am to 6pm. (more…)
As retailers prepare for Black Friday, some favorites are getting a head start. Because so many folks travel over the holiday, Pink Pineapple will start their Black Friday Sale early and for one evening only. Today (Thursday, Nov. 17), from 4-8pm, Pink Pineapple will be offering ALL cashmere styles 25%-75% off at their Clock Tower Square location in Portsmouth only. Shoppers must mention Black Friday Pricing as this is an unposted sale. I’ll have more on their special promotions next weekend in a special Black Friday post.

Her jewelry can be found at Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, along with small boutiques across the country and tomorrow, at Laura Jean. Check out her work by clicking here. To enjoy a day of premium denim, boots, one-of-a-kind jewelry and small batch Cabernet Sauvignon, pop by Laura Jean tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 18) from 12-6pm at 198 Bellevue Avenue in Newport.

Check out this leather shift dress by Newport’s own Kate Brierley, one of Isoude’s many head-tuning pieces seen recently in the studio’s Bellevue Avenue window. It’s not the first of its kind conceptually—there are vintage leather dresses relatively easily to find online, particularly by Gucci which has designed floor and knee length renditions, but Isoude’s admired craftsmanship sets this one apart. It doesn’t come cheap at $2,304, but even if you have champagne taste on a Bud Light budget, you can do a little window shopping at least next time it appears in the window.
