In an informal poll I conducted (i.e. asking about a dozen folks as champagne flowed liberally), 2012’s most popular resolution is to have no resolution. Nonetheless, the gym was more crowded than usual and I spotted plenty of joggers throughout downtown Newport getting a jump on their (well intentioned if short lived) fitness goals.
Fortunately, today’s athletic wear for both men and women has come a long way from leotards and legwarmers (actually, the latter are back in style, but not as workout gear). I stopped by Potter & Co. on Thames Street (which is one of the few centenarian shops remaining in Newport) where there are some great pieces by innovative brands, including prAna. Designed originally for climbing and yoga, prAna is soft, durable and refreshingly stylish (regular readers might remember I’ve written about the brand before). You’ll pay a little more for prAna than say, a tank from a discount retailer like TJ Maxx or Target, but you’ll also likely get longer wear, ideal performance and exponentially better quality. The Kathleen Top, pictured here, is about $60). Other great lines at include Nau, Lolë, Columbia, The North Face, Roxy, Quiksilver and more. Plus, you’ll find great sales on right now, and just in time for the cooler temperatures expected.
