Even if they weren’t made here in Newport, I’d still be a fan of Lemon & Line, a charming collection of colorful bracelets crafted from authentic sailing rope that are quickly becoming the “it” accessory in the City-by-the-Sea (but they are!). Founder Dave Norton officially launched the line last August to fête his life-long love of sailing. “I grew up cruising on board my family’s Pearson 36 and still actively race and cruise throughout the year,” he says. “Lemon & Line is a subtle way to share that passion with those around us.”
Dave explains the name Lemon & Line was slurred out over a ration of Dark & Stormies one summer night. “The details are a bit foggy, but the name certainly stuck,” he concedes. Since the launch he’s added Newport, Nantucket, Vineyard and Limited Edition collections, and customizes in campus colors. The reaction to Lemon & Line, which he describes as “subtle nautical,” has exceeded expectations. “Way beyond anything I could have ever expected really. People are very excited to see something new and authentic.”
Lemon & Line is available in Newport at Island Outfitters, so you should pop down to check ‘em out, but right now, Dave and the crew is thrilled to host a Lemon & Line giveaway for 3 lucky Newport Stylephile readers. Here’s how to enter:
1. Subscribe to Newport Stylephile (Enter email in the box on the right. Your email will never be shared or sold.)
2. Like Lemon & Line on Facebook
3. Leave a comment below confirming you’ve completed steps 1 and 2, and mention your favorite bracelet color combination
Entries will be accepted through 11:59pm, Sunday March 4, 2012.
“As a child growing up in Newport, Rhode Island, Mena Suvari loved to play archeologist, creating a dig on the four acres that surrounded her family’s 1870s stone house. When she wasn’t picking berries with her three older brothers, she would till through the soil for hours looking for remnants of old civilizations.” The article continues to tell the actress’s story of her rise to fame, love for quirky roles and the challenges that have been placed before her. Just another fabulous Newport shout out!
I headed to The Rhode Show this morning with some posh picks for the fashionable traveler. Whether you’re jetting off to St. Bart’s this spring break or just want to look like you are, there are some fabulous spring trends that are beginning to bloom.
First you’ll want to consider smart, travel friendly pieces that are light and durable—in addition to being beautiful. Turn heads when you’re sporting a one of a kind amazing tote by Francesca Joy. Designer Elise Francesca hand-paints each piece and with every component made in the USA. Size, styles and prices vary, but Rhode Show viewers can get an exclusive discount by shopping at http://www.etsy.com/shop/francescajoyPB and entering RHODESHOW at check out.
Colored denim is all the rage for spring and you’ll find varying lines pulling out all the stops offering everything from preppy pastels to unapologetic bold hues. We’re featuring these super soft AG Stilt skinny ankle jeans in cerulean, lemon lime and lavender today, but they come in a rainbow of colors at Laura Jean Denim. In contrast, a crisp white pair of AGs is essential for summer.
Pieces that are low maintenance and simple to pack like this Manuel Canovas curve hugging dress from Angela Moore are a fashionable traveler’s best friend. It’s stretchy, ultra light, takes up almost no space in your suitcase, and is multi-functional. Be the chicest on the beach or pair it with a great shoe and derby hat and you’re off to an al fresco lunch on Miami’s Ocean Drive. Also, leave the high-price bling at home for safe keeping and opt for whimsical jewelry pieces like this signature Angela Moore beaded necklace with Swarovski crystals.
A great flat will carry you a long way and the Tory Burch Miller sandal in white patent leather from Michael Hayes pairs easily with shorts, dresses, skirts and of course, your crisp white skinnies. If you’re crazy for Tory Burch and want the world to know, the Ella tote is nylon and therefore durable, but more importantly, is a fabulous carry all for when you have limited space in the overhead.
Finally, if you aren’t tropics-bound but want to fake it to you make it, or if you just want to practice safe sun, St. Tropez sunless tanning products from The Apothecary will make you look like you just you just returned from the exotic island.
Stay tuned for a link to The Rhode Show posted here!

Newport is synonymous with nautical style. It’s a place where threadbare Sperrys are worn with a certain swagger and fashion and function aren’t mutually exclusive. While French sailor boatnecks are ubiquitous and anchor icons are emblazoned on everything from blazers to belt buckles, the simple nautical stripe endures (see Brigitte Bardot above, and Coco Chanel, pictured below ca. 1930). With spring break on the brain (and some days recently, in the air), I’ve spied some head-turning dresses around town. Click more below to check ‘em out. Anchors aweigh!

I can report that the Kristina Richards Annual Blow-out Sale is worth a trip to the trendy Washington Square boutique where you’ll find up to 75% off. Instead of sale racks being in the center of the store per a usual KR sale, the whole store is marked down. I’m talking $350+ dresses by Shoshanna, Milly and more for $75, spotted some tops for $25 (which I’ll be going back for today), jeans from DL 1961, Rich & Skinny, Seven and J Brand, and pieces from Alice + Olivia (pictured above), T-bags (so soft!), Splendid, Ella Moss (rarely seen on sale), Free People, Bailey 44 and more (wear something easy to change in and out of because you might set up camp in the dressing room)! PS: Check out some of the amazing shoes and bikinis on sale too!
If you’re looking for some inspiration to keep that New Year’s Resolution going, stop into Potter & Co. where you’ll find a lot of great pieces with big markdowns that are perfect for yoga, Pilates, running, snowboarding and all outdoor pursuits. Speaking of performance gear, Patagonia on Thames has some of their signature pieces marked 40%-60% off.
Looking for a little posh and polished looks for the little ones? Mimi’s for Kids on Touro Street near Bellevue has slashed prices that are just too cute for your pint-sized fashionistas.
J. McLaughlin on Bellevue also has some killer sales on pieces you can wear all year long. Nearby, Wish is marking down tons of designer duds by Chloe, Tahari, Tory Burch, BCBG, and Rib & Rhein has a great blend of sale pieces and new arrivals.
At Pink Pineapple, buy 1 get 1 50% off all jewelry in the Newport store only as well as a huge blow-out sale with 50% off clothing (check out the new spring arrivals too!) The Portsmouth Pink Pineapple, meanwhile, is loaded with all new resort and spring clothing! Speaking of Portsmouth, Stalise is honoring President’s Day by inviting shoppers to take an extra 25% off sale merchandise (which is already a steal). Note: they’re closed Sunday so get in today.
Tropical Gangsters on Thames Street is having their $10, $20, $30 sale where you’ll find pieces at those prices throughout the store, so stock up on your “going out” gear.
Tonight at Rockport in Newport let’s toast the Newport Winter Festival with a little beer, wine and light bites with Michaela Johnson from The Rhode Show and Chef Kevin Gaudreau from Rocco’s Dinner’s Party on Bravo from 6-8pm. Hope to see you there!
Yes, you’re invited to come check out some of the amazing new spring must-haves from Rockport at this fun event! What better way to unwind after a long day with the some wine and cheese, shoes and style? See you there!
