Collecting a half dozen pairs of shoes for this morning’s Rhode Show gave me an exciting preview of some sassy shoes for great fall looks. I found (and featured) the Persia Tied Mary Jane dress shoes with metallic reptile-embossed leather at Rockport, which is also having an amazing sale right now. The style also comes in beet, all black, black with gold trim, nude and leopard, and all feature adidas adiPRENE® shock absorbing technology, so they’re 4” high but altogether comfortable ($140).
The Presia Zip Shootie by Rockport in leopard also promises to be one of the line’s most popular this season, and it’s easy to see why (also comes in black with gold trim):
There’s also a ton of edgy boots including the Tundra boot by Matt Bernson from Michael Hayes in Newport:
See these and a few more fall shoes on this morning’s Rhode Show!
It’s a thrilling time in the capital city as StyleWeek Northeast unfolds on the top floors of the historic Biltmore, showcasing the fresh talent of more than 14 designers. Avant-garde to elegant, daring to drop-jaw, the excitement is palpable as over 100 looks grace the Alex and Ani Runway Room (the hotel’s renamed Grand Ballroom) every night, Aug. 26 through Aug. 31. Each evening opens with an Accessory Showcase featuring the talent of local artisans, jewelry makers and fab finds from local boutiques, plus a cocktail hour—all before the fashion frenzy begins—and most nights are fêted with a chic after-party. It’s no surprise I stopped in my tracks when I came face to face with the collection of Zink “Steamship” handbags at Skiffington’s in Portsmouth. The signature bold colors, clean lines, fine fabric, classic shape and craftsmanship—all completely covetable…
There’s a reason for the rich hues: the company’s founder partnered with a small, artisan cooperative in Thailand that fashions the hand-woven indigos, natural-dyed greens (made from Mango bark and Cassia leaves), yellows (from Turmeric and Jack fruit wood),reds (from Sappan wood and Lac0, browns (from Coconut bark and Raintree), grays (from Malayan olives) and black from Ebony wood. (it almost reads as a list of ingredients).
Priced in the same ballpark as similar luxury bags (the ones at Skiffington’s are $350 to $385, and on sale right now up to 30% off), Zink bags are a reminder that classic and casual aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive.
Nautical rope accessories have long been ubiquitous in Newport—belts, bracelets, key chains, dog leashes, trivets, placemats (try Scrimshanders for the latter two)—and new designs seems to pop up all the time. I found hand-crafted Voyage rope bracelets at Aqua on lower Thames, colorful pieces using premium marine rope. Manufactured in New England and launched in 2011, the bracelets (they also make belts, dog leashes and key fobs) have an inspiring story you can read about here. With a portion of Voyage profits donated to ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease charities, the line is fashionable and philanthropical all at once. Pieces range from $8-$68.
Voyage bracelets can be found at Aqua, located at 468 Thames Street in Newport.
While many Rhode Islanders are looking to slow down the hands of time and squeeze in a few more beach days before summer’s end, the reality is fall is just around the corner. Shopping on the cusp of two seasons can be challenge, but here are some helpful tips and fabulous finds to make the most of your shopping dollar.
Soft, flowing blouses are light and airy (shown at top, Patterson J. Kinkaid Leena blouse with leather trim from Laura Jean) and go with just about everything.
Bib necklaces, a must-have summer accessory, will continue to be in-demand this fall, so look for warm hues (like the Stella & Dot Olivia necklace, which we’re giving to one lucky reader this week—see the post below to enter).
Whether headed to a wedding, fundraiser or special event, trade uber-summery prints like eyelet and seersucker for bolder looks like the floor length dress by Lush from Sunya
The colorful and patterned (Python print jean by Big Star, $106 at Laura Jean) pants and jeans trend also continuing into fall—again, gravitate toward jewel tones like lapis (the Stilt Cigarette AG Jean in lapis, $159 at Laura Jean) and emerald, and if time and budget affords, one neutral (Charmer Skinny Jean by Sanctuary denim in oyster, $149 at Laura Jean)
I just brought all of these looks to The Rhode Show. Click the pic below to watch!
I’d heard of the Stella & Dot jewelry line before but admittedly didn’t know too much about it, but when I spotted an eye-catching necklace multi-strand with chunky blue stones in the latest issue of Instyle, I took notice. Turns out, the collection of colorful necklaces, bracelets, earrings and more features some really fun pieces—a ton that complement Newport style, and at affordable price points (a ton of pieces are under $50 and they also have sweet sales). Turns out it’s a celeb favorite too, with Katherine Heigl, Olivia Munn, Rashida Jones and Fergie all sporting Stella & Dot. Locally, the line is sold via trunk shows and direct through independent stylist Karen Sanderson.
To get to know the line, we’re giving away the hugely popular Olivia Bob necklace in coral as featured here ($118 value). To enter, simply like you to LIKE Karen’s Stella & Dot page on Facebook, and leave a comment here (even just “Enter me!” will do!). Winner will be drawn on Sunday, August 19.
