First Lady Fashion

The Inauguration and all of its surrounding activities is Washington’s Oscars. Who’s wear who and who wears it best will take up much of the coverage today and tonight with First Lady Michelle Obama in the spotlight of it all. FLOTUS unforgettably donned a silk chiffon creation by Jason Wu for the circuit of inaugural balls she and the newly minted president attended in 2009, and rumors are swirling about what she will wear tonight. Though she reportedly has whittled it down from 20 to two choices, even the designers don’t know what will be the final choice until she reveals “the one” this evening (not to fear, Tim Gunn is on the case).

Of course, Newport is best known for its ties to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Here she is in a gown at the Metropolitan Opera in 1965 (with Met General Manager Rudolf Bing) that she also wore in Newport.ImageShe wore this silk gown, designed by Oleg Cassini, to a dinner hosted by at The Breakers for the America’s Cup in 1962. ImageThe an exhibit at Smithsonian, The First Ladies, features more than two dozen gowns from the the museum’s almost 100-year old First Ladies Collection, including pieces worn by Frances Cleveland, Lou Hoover, Jacqueline Kennedy, Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama. Tell Me About It, Stud

Studded pieces are popping up just about everywhere it seems! From fashionable frocks to sky-high heels, haute handbags to outrageous accessories, the look is as edgy as it is eye catching. Wish on William Street has some amazing Sam Edelman studded heels (unless they sold already!) and Kristina Richards, who has long carried fun studded pieces, has some drool-worthy handbags sporting the trend including a peach envelope clutch (locations in Newport and East Greenwich). Black House White Market on Long Wharf has had an amazing studded ponte pencil skirt in winter white in the window with soft gold and silver studs in an art-deco-inspired pattern. Even discounters like TJ Maxx has some studded finds including an oversized black tote I spotted last week. Here’s some studded eye candy:

The Scoop on Scarves

My good friend SCD has mastered the art of the scarf, or pashmina as it might be. She has options in nearly every color picked up everywhere from Newport shops to Italian street corners. Mastering how to tie a scarf can be tricky, and so often we know on way and stick to it. I was pleasantly surprised when a friend showed me this quick video—from Chico’s, of all places— on how to tie different shaped scarves in different ways (I’m not sold on the “vest” quite yet). Check it out!

Newport Comes to Downton Abbey

photos Nick Briggs

Debuting its third, highly anticipated season to a widely-growing American fan base, last night’s Downton Abbey introduced Martha Levinson, the mother of Cora, Countess of Grantham, a deep-pocketed Yankee who refers to her Newport home throughout her stay at Downton. Played by Shirley MacLaine, Martha and her “modern 1920 ideas” crossed the Atlantic for the nuptials of Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley, raising English eyebrows with her sharp tongue and demonstrable disdain for class consciousness and ceremonial tradition. (Of course, there are plenty of other sub-plots unfolding throughout the Crawley family upstairs and the staff downstairs that run the daily doings at Downton.)

Downton-Abbey-Ep1---Lady-Mary-and-Matthew-CrawleyLife of rich and more rich had their similarities here in Newport. The New York Times featured the story of James Silvia, a footman who served explorer Alexander H. Rice in his Newport mansion (Bellevue Avenue’s Miramar, which sold to the current owners, the Ford family, for 17.15 million in 2006) as well Rice’s Manhattan town house.  Read about Silva’s memories as a staffer by clicking here. You can also get a sense of downstairs doings on The Elms’ Servant Life Tour (click here). And Women’s Wear Daily drew parallels to the international mega-hit and Newport (click here) in a feature this past August.

Downton Abbey fans will be staying tuned to see how long the gregarious Newporter will overstay her welcome…

Rhode Island PBS will premiere Downton Abbey Season 3 on Friday, January 18 at 9 p.m. Catch an encore of Season 2 on January 11 with a two-hour special featuring the reunion of Lady Mary and Matthew and his romantic proposal. (Boston PBS aired the episode this past Sunday). Check your local listings.

Long & Lean in 2013

‘Tis the season for resolutions, and just in time, Newport’s first dedicated barre studio, Bellevue Barre, has opened on William Street. A typical barre workout combines dance conditioning, isometrics, interval training and physical therapy practices while using use the principles of yoga and Pilates for an intense, all-body conditioning workout. The method got its name from the ballet barre, which lines half the studio at Bellevue Barre and when used in exercise sequences, makes the user support their entire body weight. The result? Long lean muscles, increased flexibility and core strength, improved balance and inches lost*.

From the team behind Pulse Newport, Bellevue Barre has a variety of classes including Arms & Abs, Booty Barre, Flexibility, COREBarre, Strength and more, plus Barre Boot Camps.  Visit for more information or CLICK HERE for a class schedule.

*Results vary
