StyleWeek Thursday: Jillian Banta, Karla Marie & Susan Troy

Thursday night’s StyleWeek shows opened with Jillian Banta, a recent graduate URI’s Textiles, Fashion Merchandising, and Design program who says she draws inspiration from Europeans architecture and street style. Aquidneck Island’s own Stacie Waleyko, seen below, walked the runway in two of Banta’s designs. Stacie, represented by The Beauty Within Model Management, will wrap up her runway week (appearing every night) at tonight’s finale shows. Karla Marie Quiroz paid homage to her Dominican Republic homeland with a collection bursting with bright color, midriff bearing silhouettes and vibrant patterns. Just 22 years old, the URI student finished her ensembles with models sporting cool green eye-color and flowing tresses.

Susan Troy holds a BFA in Textiles/Fiber Arts at UMASS Dartmouth and attended the School of Fashion Design in Boston. Her collection Thursday evening was stunning–natural fabrics (lots of linen), elegant silhouettes and exquisitely styled models created an ethereal vibe reminiscent of  A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Kendra Phillip: Rhode Island Made, Nationally Craved

I first featured Kendra Phillip jewelry on Newport Stylephile in 2011. It’s made right here in Rhode Island and it’s no surprise—the Ocean State was once considered the jewelry capital of the world). It’s been great to watch the line from longtime friends turned business partners Kendra Pariseault and Phillip Sowa grow since its inception. In fact, Kendra Phillip has now been featured in publications including ImageInTouch, Redbook, People Magazine’s Style Watch and featured on the Today Show in addition to being seen on Miss Universe (and Rhode Island’s own) Olivia Culpo.

What’s really great is that there’s a story behind every piece, and with a diverse collection, it appeals to a wide base. You can find Kendra Phillip pieces at Primavera on Newport’s Bowen’s Wharf in addition to boutiques nationwide (click here for locations). Pieces start at just $35. See some of the stunning pieces below.

Brass Monkey, That Stylin’ Monkey

20130814-091206.jpgA while ago I spotted the Alex and Ani Mayor’s Alliance for NYC Animals bangle. It features the Manhattan skyline behind a paw and its super cute. Though a born New Yorker, I had to wonder, as someone who supports a number of animal charities, if there might be plans for the totally-local-but-gone-global jewelry brand to support an animal cause here at home.
Great minds think alike, as they say, and it was just announced that Alex and Ani Charity by Design has partnered with Roger Williams Park Zoo to support their education and conservation programs with a monkey charm bracelet. Twenty percent of the sales of the charm support education and conservation programs at Roger Williams Park Zoo.

“We are so thrilled to partner with Charity by Design and love everything about our Roger Williams Park Zoo Monkey Charm! It is fantastic to see people wearing the charm and supporting the zoo,” said Andrea Rollin, Sponsorship and Promotions Manager at RWPZ (and a fabulous friend).

Go bananas over this bangle by picking it up at stores or online by CLICKING HERE.

See exactly what it’s all about in this short, fun video!

Ten for 10 on The Terrace

In honor of The Chanler at Cliff Walk’s tenth anniversary (I know–they opened 10 years ago? Those years flew by…) Chef Thomas Duffy has created 10 signature cocktails, 10 small plates and $10 specials. The offer is cleverly being dubbed “Ten on the Terrace.” The Terrace is open mid-week and select weekends from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and Ten on the Terrace will be offered through August 29.

I recently had lunch there with Bryan Kosarek, a.k.a. Gay Travel Guru and in the sea air with great company and fabulous, fresh cuisine, it was afternoon to remember. Experience Ten on the Terrace before it ends!

Toxic Should Just Be a Song by Britney Spears

Triclosan…avobenzene…Phthalates…Polybrominated biphenyls…that’s not a spelling test, that’s just some of the commonplace, harmful components found in so many of our personal care products and cosmetics. I know, it’s almost unbelievable. Did you know that Europe bans more than 1400 harmful ingredients from being used in cosmetics, compared to the paltry 10 banned in the U.S.? Appalling.
lemon scrubI’ve written about the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics’ “Skin Deep” Cosmetic Database before– your go-to beauty Google— where you can plug in your hair, skin and beauty favorites and see where they rate on the toxicity scale. Use it!
So what’s the solution? It’s simple: just like with your food, make educated choices for the best results, keeping in mind we all have weaknesses (like Malt’s Thai Nachos). One of my favorite “clean” personal care lines is Ava Anderson Non-Toxic. With a complete suite of skin care, beauty, home cleansers, baby and pet care products plus odds and ends like non-toxic candles, it’s easy to find safe, healthy alternatives. Admittedly, their makeup selection is a bit limited, but what they have is fantastic. TheAA logo line is also not available in stores, it’s sold via direct sales (perhaps my least favorite way to buy), but it’s worth it. Early in the summer I placed my first order which included lipstick, lipgloss, lemon body scrub, deodorant, home refresher and sunscreen. It’s really eye-opening to experience products in their natural state. For example, the color of the lip gloss in the tube was dark peach, but it went on as a soft, natural pink. The body scrub’s natural lemon scent is light and sweet, just like when you slice a fresh lemon, as oppose to say, Bath and Body Works Vanilla Lemon Body Lotion, which includes diazolidinyl urea (what the?), methylparaben (the first red flag is that the word “meth” is in there…) and propylparaben (parabens are linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity and skin irritation…lovely).  And if you’ve heard rumors that using regular deodorant can clog pores and has even been linked to breast cancer (just one of the bad chemicals is aluminum–that’s right, the same stuff your parents used in the 70s to get better TV reception), you can rest assured with Ava Anderson’s non-toxic version which has no parabens, no aluminum or no AA2harmful chemicals. (Oh, and it works, and doesn’t smell like a hippie compound, like Tom’s of Maine, which by the way, sold out and its no longer made by two envrio Maine-iacs but instead by Colgate-Palmolive; yup, the same folks who make Ajax).

I have a few friends who also are looking to eliminate harmful beauty products and who use Ave Anderson, so one of them became a consultant so we go all go to her when we need to get our hands on new product. You can order from her too if you like: Andrea Rollin, If you like, tell her you heard about Ava on Newport Stylephile!

FYI: I’m not getting paid for this post monetarily or  in product. It is just a line I feel good about using and supporting.
