Newport Flower Show 2015: American Beauty, Timeless Style

John Corbett

Two decades in, the Newport Flower Show continues to grow and wow visitors with extraordinary arrangements, exquisite entries and the fabulous Gardeners Marketplace (in addition to the events, party, demos and more). This year’s “American Beauty, Timeless Style” theme celebrated the rose that bears the “American Beauty” name which was cultivated by the original owner of the famed “summer cottage” in the late 1800s. Displays, meanwhile, honored timeless style, including that of Newport’s most legendary bride and style icon, Jacqueline Kennedy. (The Angela Moore Fashion Show & Champagne Brunch will continue the theme with “Fashion Through the Decades” on July 9)

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the show, The Preservation Society of Newport County commissioned mother/daughter artists Cecy and Marilyn Jones to design and hand-paint a limited edition Newport Flower Show silk scarf ($150.00, 10% off for Preservation Society members), available at the Newport Mansions stores and NewportStyle.net.

La-la-loving Lululemon in Newport

lululemon newport pop up shop 4I had heard about Lululemon, like many folks, for quite a while before I found myself actually inside one of these fitness-meets-hipness outposts. The technical wear for yoga, running, tennis, working out, and as the company says, “most other sweaty pursuits,” is known for attractive designs and snug, performance fits. I wandered into their Soho shop when I had left a running top behind in Newport and was sold on the well-reviewed Swiftly Tech long sleeve top, so I made it my own and left with it in the lululemon newport pop up shop 6ubiquitous red reusable shopping-turned-lunch bag emblazoned with inspirational adages.

Today, “Luluheads,” as the devout followers of the brand are called, can be found around the world, and now, local Luluheads will be delighted to learn of the Lululemon Newport Pop Up Shop on William Street (in the space formerly occupied by Wish, which moved to lower Thames).

It hardly has the feel of a pop-up shop as there is a nice amount of diverse pieces for men and women stocked all around the contemporary, coastal-designed space. Though intended to be seasonal, Lululemon fits seamlessly into Newport’s retail and recreational community. It’s placed directly next door to Newport Power Yoga’s Studio B, the donation based class space offering gentle yoga (great for kids, beginners or anyone…20% of monthly profits going to a local charity), and steps away from bustling Bellevue Avenue. So I  am sure I speak for many Newporters when I say I hope the shop gets comfortable and sticks around a while

Au Courant 2015: The Hottest Ticket in Town

Golden Age of HollywoodIn 2007, family services provider Child & Family asked how they could merge fashion and philanthropy, unveiling Ophelia’s Wardrobe, an upscale designer sale with music and cocktails, all for a good cause. The event has morphed into Au Courant, what many call the biggest fashion event of the season and the best $125 ticket in town.

This year the event falls on the night of Friday, June 26, and through the collaborative efforts of Child & Family and img_2363StyleWeek Northeast, Au Courant will showcase extraordinary creative talents of six of the finest designers in the region. It all unfolds to ultimately make a difference in the lives of children and families throughout Rhode Island.

I’m delighted to serve on the event committee for this year’s Au Courant which will kick off with a lavish cocktail party catered by Pranzi Catering & Events that includes an open bar, specialty bars and hors d’oeuvres. There’s also an amazing live and silent auction (we’re talking extraordinary experiences, like the lunch with Tim Gunn I let slip through my fingers!). Guests will then be called to the runway tent and be treated to an awe-inspiring runway show by:

Jonathan Joseph Peters / Jessica Abernathy / Artiss Akarra / Antwan Byrd / Robert Merton / Amy Stetkiewicz

Apres fashion fun: more cocktails, music and dancing–plus shopping designer fashion. Most importantly, the entire elegant evening benefits Child & Family, the largest and most comprehensive social service provider in Newport County, and one of the largest in the State of Rhode Island.

Fashion, philanthropy, fabulous fashion, fine wine? Sure sounds like the hottest ticket in town to me~
