Early in the year, editor-in-chief of Providence Media publications, Elyse Major, reached out to me about a story idea for the June 2022 issue of Providence Monthly about the business of fashion and how it impacts the capital city and Rhode Island at large — not only economically, but culturally as well. I’ve worked with Elyse for five years and have had the pleasure of contributing to Providence Media publications since 2004, and story ideas have historically been generated from both ends, but Elyse wanted to suss out an angle about fashion and StyleWeek that went far beyond the visual.
When many people think of fashion shows, they think of the glamour of it all ‒ the lights, the music, the looks. But over the past dozen years, STYLEWEEK Northeast has had a far-reaching economic and cultural impact beyond measure. For this cover story, I talked to Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Congressman David Cicilline, Mayor Jorge Elorza, PWCVB President & CEO Kristen Adamo, Keith Tavares, and designers Kent Stetson, Nick Pini and more about the opportunities, significance and influence this event has meant to Rhode Island. Read the story here.
STYLEWEEK has showcased over 217 designers from all over the U.S. and Canada on its runway since its inception in 2010. This Thursday, STYLEWEEK Northeast returns to The Creative Capital and I’m so looking forward to experiencing the innovative, visionary designs of the artists, the energy of the events, and all that makes STYLEWEEK extraordinary.
