During the Newport International Boat Show two weeks ago, I checked out a preview of some of Sebago’s fall styles for men and women. (They were official footwear sponsor of the show, and it’s no surprise as the company has long had an affinity for the City-by-the-Sea.) Founded in 1946, Sebago has long been known for boat shoes, but made their way to the mainstream fashion scene in the 80s. They’ve more recently surged in popularity around the globe when Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton was spotted wearing two-toed Sebago Bala deck shoes (on Newport Stylephile here).
This fall, Sebago welcomes fresh new designs, like the men’s Stockton boot with Woolrich wool panels (in the top pic), the sophisticated leather Salem shoe, and the slip-on Drake boot with waterproof full grain or suede leather. For women, the Claremont Brogue menswear-inspired shoe AND boot (favorite color is Black Cherry, pictured here), the Saranac Rider boot with double buckle collar detail, and the plush Coast Two-Eye quilted boat shoe are all remarkable standouts.
Collecting a half dozen pairs of shoes for this morning’s Rhode Show gave me an exciting preview of some sassy shoes for great fall looks. I found (and featured) the Persia Tied Mary Jane dress shoes with metallic reptile-embossed leather at Rockport, which is also having an amazing sale right now. The style also comes in beet, all black, black with gold trim, nude and leopard, and all feature adidas adiPRENE® shock absorbing technology, so they’re 4” high but altogether comfortable ($140).
The Presia Zip Shootie by Rockport in leopard also promises to be one of the line’s most popular this season, and it’s easy to see why (also comes in black with gold trim):
There’s also a ton of edgy boots including the Tundra boot by Matt Bernson from Michael Hayes in Newport:
See these and a few more fall shoes on this morning’s Rhode Show!
Bold and bright, preppy or poppy, graphic prints are gracing fashion finds from head to toe this spring. Taking a cue from popular prints often found for interior spaces, this wonderfully whimsical trend arrives just in time for the warmer temperatures. Play up the prints with punchy, eye-catching shoes and accessories, or jump in with both feet with a top, bottom or fabulous dress. Here are some local finds I brought to The Rhode Show this morning:
This Eleanor wrap dress in pink mod by LaRoque (above) from the Pink Pineapple (with locations in Newport and Portsmouth) is fresh and flattering with a girly ruffled collar and comfortable adjustable fit. It’s a growing line available in just 40 boutiques in the country and we’re lucky to fine LaRoque in RI. ($178)
The Arabesque skirt by SugarLips (left), also from the Pink Pineapple, features subtle nautical blue stripes that gracefully bend and swoop along an asymmetrical hemline with dramatic draping along the side. Paired with a crisp white tank and gold thong flip flops, you’ll be ready for a day in Newport! ($65)
Bow-ties have always been a bastion of good style, but now more than ever they are center stage—and perhaps no one rocks one better than stylist to the stars Brad Goreski. With a charming bamboo print, this spiffy silk bowtie from J. McLaughlin in Newport can go take you from professional to party boy. ($45)
Let’s hear it for Lil’ Rhody-made Roeho clutches! Even if this bag wasn’t the creation of two young best friends and budding designers, which makes it all the more charming (support local artisans!), I’d still have the Isabella clutch (left) on my growing “must have” list. ($70). Ps: It should come as no surprise either, that this particular bag is inspired summers in Newport. Learn more about the company by clicking here.
A whimsical interpretation of the classic trench (which, by the way, is worth its weight in gold), this pink I. Madison weatherproof, A-line light coat is perfect for spring and a steal at $37, available at Wish Newport.
Boat shoes are the unofficial causal uniform in Newport, and these Seashore Two-Eye boat shoes by Sebago from Active Sole in Newport feature durable canvas uppers so they’re pretty and practical ($79).
The J. McLaughlin Aken tote is roomy enough for a laptop and just about everything else and flexible with soft nylon fabric and the leather straps with attractive, gold latch hardware. ($98)
The runways are alive at the Providence Biltmore as the show-stopping fashions seen at StyleWeek are the talk of the town, and I went to The Rhode Show this morning with some StyleWeek-inspired shoes and accessories. (There was much hometown pride in the house when Tiverton’s own Nicole Lebreux, an FIT grad, unveiled a collection last night that showcased vintage-inspired prints in a modern take of classic silhouettes.) Though designers spend months sketching and constructing garments, the final look goes far beyond the clothing. Hair, make-up, shoes and accessories are all part of the style equation and we have seen some extraordinary pieces sashay down the runway (you can practically hear fashion guru Tim Gunn advising, “Use the accessories wall thoughtfully!”).
Arguably Rhode Island’s best known designer, Jonathan Joseph Peters crafted a collection that earned explosive applause during his opening night show with looks he described as a “wandering warrior gypsy” and “post-apocalyptic” which included feathers, chains, medallions and tribal influences (accessories by House of Cach). I brought chandelier earrings, bib necklaces and chunky cuffs from Newport’s Sequin, and a bamboo clutch and double-roped belt from J. McLaughlin, to capture an inspired look by Peters.
Whether you call them shooties or booties, the chunky shoe was all over the runway this StyleWeek (like these ones by Sam Edelman from Active Sole in Newport). For a more understated approach, designers paired looks with a subtle nude stiletto—always sexy and a handy wardrobe staple—with ensembles, like the pair I brought this morning also by Sam Edelman.
On opening night, Selahdor by David Chum juxtaposed ultra-feminine frocks with decidedly masculine-inspired footwear for women. I found the exact same look with this Lola Brogue Oxford for women from Rockport in Newport–amazing!
Stylist extraordinaire Christina K. Pierce gave me the scoop the common thread woven throughout many of the shows she’s working with (which includes Nicole Lebreux, Candice Wu, Chances R Designs by Toni Lyn Spaziano, Harpy by Jen Greeke and Yellow Clover by Sarah Prost): crystal embellishments! From edgier interpretations with gun metal gray and rich bronze to rich jewel tones, designers brought the bling.

Looking for a way to be sassy this season without sacrificing comfort for style? Meet the Sam Edelman shoes I spotted at Active Sole on Bowen’s Wharf (which is, by the way, is all decked out in its holiday finery). These patent leather 4-inch, “Portney” stilettos (above) are undeniably feisty with the pointed toe and reptile-embossed heel inset. (Also available in blush). Another can’t miss showstopper? The sky-high suede “Javi” wedges which can be perfectly paired with casual flared jeans for a decidedly ’70s sass—don’t forget to pair with some multi-strand necklaces and bangles. (Sam shoes range from $120 – $150).

There was much ado about the royal newlyweds recent visit to North America, and while all reports were on the good will mission of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, all eyes were on ever-fashionable Kate Middleton. Her dresses (Jenny Packham, Alexander McQueen, Erdem, Reiss, Issa Helayel, Catherine Walker, Joseph) were extraordinary, but her casual ensembles were equally spot-on, and more than one had a common denominator: Kate’s beloved Sebago Bala boat shoe.
So, when I popped into by Active Sole on Bowen’s Wharf in Newport last week, I stopped in my tracks when I spotted a selection of the very same boat shoe/moccasin hybrid. The fashionable flat seamlessly blends into City-by-the-Sea style, but the Bala is selling around the world. According to a recent New York Times article, after Kate was photographed in them while on their excursion the style sold out across Britain—but they can still be found stateside, including at Active Sole, in various color combo for $80.
Deals & Steals: Sumer sales have arrived including at Jack Wills, Banana Republic, JH Breakell and Potter & Co., in addition to the annual tent sale at Team One Newport starting tomorrow (for functional, fashionable finds a lá Kate as seen above)!
