Rhode Island’s own Luca + Danni, a rapidly expanding jewelry line, is a nod to the state’s past as the leading jewelry manufacturer in the country. Other lines, like Alex and Ani and Loren Hope, along with Luca + Danni, are helping steer the Ocean State back in the right direction.
Fred Magnanimi, an investment banker by trade, left the Big Apple to return to Rhode Island and his family’s jewelry manufacturing business and launched Luca + Danni just over a year ago. The line is a tribute to his brother Danny, who lost his battle with Leukemia. Danny’s dream was to create a unique line of handcrafted, American-made jewelry that inspired others through the journey of life. Fueled by Danny’s passion and a burning desire to carry forth his vision, Luca + Danni was born.
Named after Fred’s two young children, Luca + Danni reminds us that through love, inspiration, and passion, we should all boldly embrace the journey of life.
Recently, the company launched a breast cancer awareness line in which 20% of the proceeds from the collection’s specified bracelets and necklaces are proudly donated to the Gloria Gemma Foundation.
Today, Luca + Danni is available in Newport at the Brick Market: Museum and Shop in addition to more than 700 retailers in the US and Canada.

What’s All the Racquet? Fila, Packer Shoes & the International Tennis Hall of Fame Release Limited Edition Sneakers
The International Tennis Hall of Fame (ITHF), Packer Shoes and FILA have collaborated on two limited-edition sneaker styles set to debut this week during the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. This is the first lifestyle footwear collaboration for the ITHF and partnering with Packer Shoes, which first began in 1907 in Yonkers, NY, and FILA, which has a rich heritage in tennis and role as a trendsetter in sneaker culture, is a natural fit.
The limited edition sneaker collaboration features two FILA Classic Tennis models. The T-1 Mid was designed with an all over Sycamore green suede upper, while the Original Tennis shoe features an off-white suede upper and Sycamore/FILA Red tumbled leather flag (very Gucci-esque!). Both feature a gum bottom and terry lining with a special International Tennis Hall of Fame footbed, a Packer embroidered detail back collar and comes wrapped in custom packaging.
The ITHF will premiere the footwear during the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships this week. The shoes will be at Packer retail location in Teaneck, NJ (a must-visit for sneaker junkies) and online, beginning on July 18. The T1-Mid and Original Tennis pairs will retail for $110. A portion of the proceeds of sales of the shoe will be donated to junior tennis programs at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
The shoes will also be front and center on the runway this Thursday at the Alex and Ani Ladies Day Runway Show and Champagne Brunch featuring styles from Brooks Brothers and FILA. The runway show will unfold on the Horseshoe Court with brunch on the piazza and wine from Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyards from 9-11am. At the event, you’ll also see a new clothing collaboration by FILA and the ITHF. Tickets still available, CLICK HERE for details.
A while ago I spotted the Alex and Ani Mayor’s Alliance for NYC Animals bangle. It features the Manhattan skyline behind a paw and its super cute. Though a born New Yorker, I had to wonder, as someone who supports a number of animal charities, if there might be plans for the totally-local-but-gone-global jewelry brand to support an animal cause here at home.
Great minds think alike, as they say, and it was just announced that Alex and Ani Charity by Design has partnered with Roger Williams Park Zoo to support their education and conservation programs with a monkey charm bracelet. Twenty percent of the sales of the charm support education and conservation programs at Roger Williams Park Zoo.
“We are so thrilled to partner with Charity by Design and love everything about our Roger Williams Park Zoo Monkey Charm! It is fantastic to see people wearing the charm and supporting the zoo,” said Andrea Rollin, Sponsorship and Promotions Manager at RWPZ (and a fabulous friend).

I’ve been writing about New England vineyards for various magazines for nearly 10 years, so when Sakonnet Vineyards in Little Compton went on the market a few years ago, I (along with many others, I’m sure) was hopeful that the stunning 170-acre property would remain a vineyard. When news broke in May that Carolyn Rafaelian, president of Rhode Island’s own Alex & Ani, had bought the property, there was a collective sigh of relief. If her purchase and admirable restoration of Newport’s Belcourt is any indication, rest assured the vineyard is in good hands (with dozens of expanding bangles of course).
I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the new Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyards where there’s a palpable excitement in the air. Though there have been a few changes to the property already, including the addition of a sizable event tent that offers views of grapevines, pastures and the peaceful Sakonnet River, there are also big plans to improve the property with a re-purposed space for meetings/gatherings, an expanded cafe and more events, like the 2013 Little Compton Antiques Festival (Aug. 3).
Already wine production has climbed to over 30,000 cases annually and longtime winemaker Elaine Bernier continues to oversee the production of the vineyard’s Vinifera varietals including Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc as well as Vidal Blanc, a French-American hybrid and my personal favorite made by the winery.
The cafe is being run by Russell Morin Fine Catering, and I have to say when I had lunch there, it was outstanding. A cool breeze coming off the Sakonnet River, grapevines as far as the eye can see, and a wine flight that offered up all the differing varietals combined for a feast for the senses.
One fabulous way to experience the vineyard is by gathering up some good friends and heading to their Summer Concert Series, held on most Thursday nights (CLICK HERE for a schedule).
Here’s an inside look at it all…Cheers!
I love the smell of champagne in the morning…
Ladies Day at the International Tennis Hall of Fame Championships returns this Thursday and though tickets are sold out, you can still relish in the pink and green ‘preppiness! Pop by Angela Moore’s boutique (190 Bellevue Avenue, just outside the THOF) for the after party from noon to 5pm the same day for more shopping, champagne, tasty treats, raffles and informal modeling (and after 4pm there will be an ATP World Tour stars autograph signing). Check out looks by Manuel Canovas, Just Madras, Jack Rogers, Dizzy Lizzie, Echo and of course, Angela Moore.
PS: Tune into The Rhode Show at 9am on WPRI channel 12 TUESDAY, JULY 9 for a fashion show preview!
To know me is to know I love animals and animal rescue organizations like our local Potter League (its a miracle I only have one dog…though his size and weight is equivalent to like four medium size dogs…). So you can image how delighted I was when Alex and Ani recently debuted these paw print expandable wire bangles in Russian Gold and Russian Silver with 20% of the sales being donated to the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals which supports, heals and finds caring homes for both dogs and cats. The bangle is $28 and available in stores and online. (Finally, a fashionable common-ground between ‘dog people’ and ‘cat people!’)
Also, if you like a bargain (and you should this time of year), you may want to take note of the December Bangle of the Month, a Sacred Dove expandable wire bangle which evokes the spirit of faith, grace and truth. Get $5 off the regular $28 price this month only both in stores and online.
