Winter Skin Saviors: Local Experts Weigh In

dry_skin_care_in_winter

Let’s start with the good news: it’s been unseasonably warm up until about now. But let’s face it: December is less than 10 days away. It will be cold soon enough and eventually, your skin will react to the fluctuating outdoor freeze meets fireside swelter. Here are some seasonal skin remedies from local expects to get you through the deep freeze.

1. Image Skincare Vital C Mask from The Apothecary. The team at The Apothecary can barely keep this baby in stock! Using gentle enzymes to exfoliate dead skin cells while adding minerals and essential anti-oxidants to improve your skin’s overall health, you will look like a light has been turned on under your skin and feel super are Escentuals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Creamhydrated after this mask treatment. Use as a manual exfoliator to increase cell turnover rate without any abrasion or leave on as a masque to refresh and revitalize. $32

2. Bare Escentuals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream. The Apothecary’s co-owner Jenni Graham personally recommends this product for people with drier skin who like luminous, glowing finishes and a “natural” look. “It makes your skin appear younger. Even if you don’t feel as confident at first because of the light coverage, I promise you will get compliments if applied correctly!” This mineral-based cream combines the best of a BB, a CC, and a tinted moisturizer to provide increased skin hydration after just one week. $29 (9 shades)

The Apothecary is currently running a special and offering deluxe samples of both these products the month of November while supplies last.

3. Whish Body Oil from ArchBeauty. “Not only does this oil leave your skin silky smooth, it also has clinically proven peptides to calm inflamed skin while increasing skin luminance.” Arch beauty founder Sara Ross says she personally slathers this oil on her apres shower then towls off. “This will keep the itchy body skin away,” she says. Three Whishes Body Oil is made in the USA with Earth friendly packaging and ingredients. Paraben free, sulfate free, DEA & TEA free, petrochemical free, phthalate GM Collin Diamond Cream (2)free. 4. NOTE: ArchBeauty will be moving to 333 Valley Road, Middletown in January! Congrats, ladies!

5. Block Island Organics Night Cream: I’ve been using this cream for about month and I love it! Packed with antioxidants like vitamin C (offers anti-aging benefits) and vitamin E (protects against the effects of sun exposure), this organic and natural cream nourishes skin. Organic ingredients like cocoa butter, rosehip, avocado, aloe vera, jojoba and more nourishes and moisturizes, plus its non-greasy and suitable for all skin types. (Personally, I love that its 100% cruelty-free as this is a vegan formula and never tested on animals.) Also, you won’t find any nasty parabens, sulfates, petrochemicals, phthalates, dyes or artificial fragrances in this fabulous cream. Even better? Here’s a special offer: Use code THANKS30 srating on Thanksgiving through 12/1 to receive 30% off the regular price of $29.99. (Free shipping on al orders over $50).

Are You Ready For Some Football?!

In a stroke of fortuitous coincidence, the New England Patriots and New York Giants share more than just an insatiable desire to fly home from Indy with the Vince Lombardi Trophy. They share the same team colors, which is making it mighty simple to appear completely impartial in this post (note both teams are represented donning in NFL gear in the pic above).

Whether you’re headed out on the town, parting with pals, or watching from the comfort of the couch, here are some fab local finds to get you into the spirit of the game (even if you’re most looking forward to the commercials)…

RED: Whether you prefer lipstick, lip stain, balm, gloss or plumper, there’s a great array of shades by Smashbox from ArchBeauty. To infuse a gentle touch of sun, try Stila’s ingenious blush-in-one Convertible Color from The Apothecary.

WHITE: Users of Bare Minerals swear by Well-Rested, the eye-brightening shadow base that conceals when you’re anything but. Another trick to look bright-eyed (even if was a hazy Saturday night) is a light sweep of Bare Minerals Snowflake shimmer eye shadow right below the brow line, found at The Apothecary.

BLUE: Bring the bling with glistening JoJo’s, seemingly Newport’s favorite sparkly stud., available in too many colors to count at Bellevue Beauty Walk. Add a little whimsy with blue nail color like Turquoise & Caicos, Lapiz of Luxury or Mezmerised by Essie at CVS.

Most make-up cited under $20, JoJo’s $30, Essie nail color $8.

Pretty, Pretty Polish for Fall

It’s here. It’s actually been here for a few weeks, but if you’ve been denying the fact that we’re in the throes of autumn up ‘til now, the jig is up. It is downright chilly. It’s time to embrace new colors from head to toe, including for nails. There are some amazing shades and collections being offered through various lines.

ArchBeauty has some beautiful bold hues from butter LONDON, famous for their high fashion, non-toxic nail lacquers with names like All Hail the Queen, Cheeky Chops and Come to Bed Red. Oh, and their Horse Power Nail Fertilizer includes “Horsetail,” a nutrient-rich herb high in silica, which helps to grow and strengthen nails while acting as a glossy clear coat.

Over at The Apothecary, RGB is the nail line of choice and with good reason: it’s chip-resistant, chemical free, cruelty free and made in the USA. It’s a celebrity favorite— Diane Kruger, Zoë Saldana, Lea Michele, Emma Watson, Jessica Alba, Sophia Bush and Michelle Williams have all been seen sporting RGB and Allure magazine just chose RGB as a favorite eco-friendly nail polish line.

At Green Envy Eco-Boutique in Brick Market Place, where owner Rachel’s entire product offering share an environmentally conscious approach, nail care is no different. Karma Organic Nail Polishes and soy-based, biodegradable, odorless Nail Polish Remover are refreshingly safe and the polish has a nice array of shades.

None of the three of these lines contain Formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP (it’s all of the fashion without any of the funk!) and retail under $20.

Smashbox Makes a Splash in Newport

When Sara Schlieff-Ross of Archbeauty Skin Care Salon & Boutique told me her charming Memorial Boulevard beauty hotspot was adding world-renowned make-up line Smashbox to their already powerhouse product lines, I was thrilled. Best known as a studio-inspired line, celebrating its 15th year, is best known for illuminating essentials, long-wearing products and weightless foundations that leave nothing but a photo-fabulous, flawless finish. (And Smashbox is cruelty-free, so its never tested on animals.)

Archbeauty has a number of Smashbox essentials including Photo Finish Foundation Primer made with vitamins A and E, grape seed extract and green tea that is said to help “reduce the appearance of fine lines and pores for flawless skin with a velvety-smooth finish.” It was named one of Marie Claire’s 25 Products That Will Change Your Life, and an InStyle Best Beauty Buy.

Since Newport has only had about 12 hours of sun over the past week, I picked up one of Smashbox’s fab bronzing products. Fusion Soft Lights is a light, shimmering powder with five shades that blend together for a natural glow. The beauty boutique also had the equally tempting Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder, a anti-aging powder with 48 minerals, 11 amino acids, a powerful peptide, and one more ingredient–pure gold. There’s also the “O” products like O-Glow, a clear cheek gel they call an intuitive blush made with Goji Berry-C Complex that reacts with your skin’s chemistry to create a natural glowing blush.

Archbeauty is located at 18 Memorial Blvd. West (401-619-5885) and is the only place you can get Smashbox in Newport, and Erin and Sara are more than happy to give you a walk through the line.
