In a Clutch

How fabulous is this Moyna beaded clutch I spotted at Monelle on Bowen’s Wharf this week?!? The clutch with Navy blue beads that contrast with gold beads in Newport’s recognizable NPT motif actually fits a bit more than your standard night out MILK necessities (Money, ID, Lip gloss and Keys naturally … thanks ML!). Cost: $170

Monelle, directly across from the Clarke Cooke House, is the sister shop to Chace N’ Lulu, right around the corner. What they have in common: totally covet-able (and pricey) pieces, many with a nautical flair from likes including Lilly Pulitzer, Susana Monaco, Elizabeth McKay, Kate Spade, J Band, Cortland Park, Sail to Sable, etc. If you want your personal monogram beaded clutch, Moyna can custom make those as well. They typically range from $50 to $190 depending on the size. CLICK HERE to visit Moyna’s custom order site.

Secret Santa? Check Out This Fab Find Under $50

How cute are these Lolo bags I spotted at Bellevue Beauty Walk? The little vinyl zip bags can be used as colorful clutches, cute pencil cases, or mighty fine makeup bags.

The majority of the selection at BBW is appropriately nautical-themed (when in Newport…), but to see the whole line, which includes martini glasses, Scottie dogs, bikinis, skulls & crossbones, pineapples, palm trees and more, CLICK HERE

Totally Cute Crustacean! The Alex and Ani July Bangle is Adorable–and on Sale!

By now, Newporters and beyond have taken to Alex and Ani, which will take center stage this summer as you’ll be able to buy your Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festival tickets at the Bowen’s Wharf shop, but I’m head over heels for the July featured bangle. The 3-D crab bangle, says Alex and Ani, will remind you to trust your instincts and seek alternative routes to reach your goals. I also love it because the crab is often associated with Maryland, where I lived for years.

Best of all, the expandable bangle is $5 off the original $28  price, so it’s just $23, but this month only. The bangle is available in Russian Gold and Russian Silver while supplies last. Planning on doing a little more shopping at Alex and Ani boutiques or online?  CLICK  HERE for a $5 off your total purchase (restrictions apply).

Active Sole in Newport Has a Leg Up on Summer Style

Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic ode to the must-have stiletto, “Hello, lover!” has become part of the footwear aficionado’s vernacular, which would explain why the phrase slipped out when I set my eyes on these beauties at Active Sole on Newport’s Bowen’s Wharf. The leather Lauren by Ralph Lauren, “Fantara” sandal, with its sexy ankle strap and straw-wrapped, natural-hued platform, boasting a 4.7″ heel, is positively, drool-worthy (also available in all black). There were also some gorgeous Ralph Lauren flats, and for the more casual day on the town, I loved the totally preppy madras and crisp white Lacoste sneaks, which were also in both pink and black slip-ons. For an easy, breezy, nearly indestructible shoe, check out the selection of OKA b. (at right) slides and sandals. They’re 100% recyclable, waterproof, made in the USA and priced under $40, plus they each have massage beads embedded on the soles for added comfort.

Oh wait, you think I forgot about the boys? Of course not. How could I when I saw the positively kick-ass Sebago Docksides, high-top boat shoes that owner Stephen Coyne described as the lovechild between the classic Converse high top and unapologetic Doc Marten. Although they look totally sweet, don’t be fooled. These babies feature a slip-resistant sole that helps maintain solid footing whether on deck or land (pictured here in “firecracker red”). These, plus the great Puma gear, Levi’s (the coveted Made & Crafted line), Roar clothing and forthcoming Bensimon pieces will complete the men’s wardrobe.

Stay tuned for more info on a fabulous event Active Sole is planning for next month!

Active Sole is located at 16 Bowen’s Wharf in Newport.

Retail Redux ‘Round the Wharves

I’m fielding emails left and right about who is going where, who has closed, and who has opened. There’s a lot on the way, but in the interim, here’s the answers to some of the more pressing questions at hand.

Chace N’ Lulu did not close, I’m happy to report. It moved from it’s cozy, former location at 57 America’s Cup Avenue to it’s new digs just a stone’s throw away at 17 Bowen’s Wharf, which was once home to the Newport Candle Company. The shop is stocked with great summer pieces from Kara Janx, Susana Monaco, Brandy Melville (nautical striped dress pictured left), Kate Spade, Kontatto, Citizens of Humanity, Skirtin’ Around, Minnie Rose and more.

Bellevue Beauty Walk, which was indeed, once closer Bellevue on William Street, has jumped wharves. Goodbye old location on Bowen’s and hello new, pristine boutique at nearby 1 Bannisters Wharf. The shop has even more great pieces, including a jaw-dropping amount of JoJos (check out their new bangles below, right); in addition to essie nail polish (loving their new shade, ‘topless & barefoot’–so cute); Gretchen Scott cover-ups; an impressive display of GloMinerals makeup; fragrance, bath and body goods from Bliss, Fresh, Kai and Pacifica (love Pacifica) and amazing, affordable jewelry. Toast the shop’s official grand opening this Saturday, April 16. Call to book a free makeover with make-up artist (appointments 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), Anna Cristino.

So who’s taken Bellevue Beauty Walk’s spot? A familiar name: Primavera. The home decor, jewelry and gift boutique knocked down some walls and expanded to create a spacious, warm and welcoming space. Find fun custom signs, Tea Forté’s gourmet whole leaf teas, unique cards, an in-store John Medeiros jewelry ‘boutique,’ Musewear Pottery and so much more. PS: If you’re looking for a personalized wedding, shower, birthday or sentimental gift, Primavera has a great selection of platters, frames, signs and more they can customize and turn around quickly.

Beneficial Bangles

I just wrote about Alex and Ani last week, but today I’m putting the eco-conscious jewelry line back in the spotlight as the team behind the original expandable bangle and bangle bar has debuted a black obsidian bangle to support relief efforts in Japan. This bangle has been specifically designed to support relief of the recent disasters in Japan utilizing Alex and Ani’s Charity By Design process. With charms promoting healing protection and peace, the piece is available in a Russian Gold or Russian Silver finish, and is adorned with a black obsidian stone which is said help to ward off negative energy and keep thoughts positive. Together, Alex and Ani and Spreehive, Rhode Island’s local answer to Groupon, will be donating a portion of proceeds from the sale of the Obsidian Bangles to the Red Cross. In lieu of the regular $38 price, the bangle is just $19. Purchase through and either pick up at Alex and Ani retail stores, including Newport’s Bowen’s Wharf locations, or order through the website if you do not live near any of the four retail stores.

The special offer is available for the next few days. Click here for information and to order.

Alex and Ani made headlines this week when it was announced the Rhode Island-based company will sponsor the Harbor Stage at Fort Adams State Park at the Newport Folk Festival on July 30-31 and at the Newport Jazz Festival on August 6-7. It’s the first time in the history of the Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festival one corporation will be a sponsor at both events.

Dinner for Two at Fluke and a Hometown Holiday Gift from Tiverton Four Corners

It’s Thursday, which means its a Dinner for Two night at Fluke, a newly introduced winter special that’s a refreshing take on winter dining deals. Every week, diners can enjoy a new Dinner for Two menu on Wednesdays and Thursdays, which include an appetizer to share, a soup or salad for each, a main course and dessert for $49 (add a featured wine selection for $100). I had the pleasure of enjoying Dinner for Two a few weeks ago and with the holidays on our doorstep, it was a pleasure to check our stress at the door and savor such rich flavors. Dimly lit and with spacious seating, the expansive windows capture on of the most romantic views Christmas in Newport: white light illuminate the trees on Bowen’s and Bannister’s Wharf while the shops and restaurants are dressed in their holiday finery with ribbons, greens and wreaths and, in the distance, a lone boat sails lazily across Newport Harbor.

This week, Chef Neil Manacle celebrates his admiration for cuisines of the Mediterranean with a Seafood Paella featuring Salt Cod Croquettes to start, soup or salad, fabulous paella, and a dessert sampler. Next week’s Dinner for Two: Stuffed Veal Breast. Fluke’s third floor lounge is also a captivatingly intimate space, perfect for enjoying their small plates and hand-crafted cocktails. Dinner reservations encouraged. Please mention Dinner for Two as you make your reservation, 849-7778. Image: an example of Fluke’s dishes, roast pork served with mustard BBQ sauce, potato salad and roast corn succotash.

Today’s Hometown Holidays gift idea comes from the charming village of Tiverton Four Corners (which, by the way, is sporting a snazzy new web site). Artisans Michael Roseberry and Bruce Winn are the masterminds behind Roseberry Winn, designing exquisite pottery and tile from their circa 1840 studio/storefront. We love this elegant teapot, which matches other pieces in Roseberry Winn’s tea service set, so owned can expand their collection. The teapot holds 32 oz. of water and buyers can select a glaze color from a diverse palate  (retails for $150.00).
