Deals & Steals: MLK Weekend Edition

With Monday’s observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Newporters are looking forward to the 3-day weekend which may include sledding, ice skating on Lily Pond or at the Skating Center, or toasting our winter wonderland with a piping hot Irish Coffee (would love to know YOUR favorite Irish Coffee around town). Fresh of the Christmas holiday rush, area retailers are anxious to move inventory to make room for spring (oh, doesn’t spring sound fabulous right now?) Here’s the scoop:

Wish (‎664 Thames Street) is slashing prices with 20%, 30% and 50% of select styles, and they have a ton of labels to tout: Marc Jacobs, DVF, Burberry, Free People, Prada, and Coach as well as designer denim as low as $25! Sale is today through Sunday…

The Linen Shop (196 Bellevue Avenue): There’s just something about starting off the new year with fresh linens…and here’s great news. THE ENTIRE SHOP is 20% off and there’s a special sale table with goods marked down up to 70%. If you’ve never been, you should stop by there, just to take in the history of it’s location and get a sense of what fine linens are all about. Owner Meg McGuire is always a gracious host and knows just about everything there is to know about bath and linen lines. Here you’ll find pieces by Abyss, Matouk, Yves Delorme and more.

Michael Hayes (202 Bellevue Avenue and 19 Bowen’s Wharf) Designer Sale is in full swing with, and I love this, 20% off already marked down clearance goods.

Cottage & Garden (9 Bridge Street) is putting all topiaries on sale tomorrow (Saturday), so here’s your chance to welcome a little living, breathing freshness to your home.

Banana Republic in Washington Square (124 Thames Street) has a lot of great items on sale. Let me just tell you—I stopped in last night just to see if there might be a piece for me to wear this coming Monday in The Rhode Show (I’ll be dishing on my Golden Globes best dressed and hot messes!) and was torn between two great dresses. I bring them both to the register (including the one pictured here). The silk v-neck drape dress in grey was originally $150, had been marked down to $129, then $109, then $79, then $54.99. THEN I spot a sign—items are AN ADDITIONAL 40% off—hello, my new $32.99 dress. Oh, and the little black number I was mulling over too? $150 to $109 to $59.99 to hanging in my closet for $35.99!!!

If you’re looking to get gorg, Ki-Ra Salon (6 West Marlborough Street) is celebrating their annual Pay It Forward Sale—bring in a bag of non-perishables or personal hygiene products and receive 30% off all services (over $15) and all retail products (some restrictions apply), now through February 12…

Mommies take note: Infant Interiors (8 Freebody Street, # 1) by lovely cover girl Roselle McConnell is having their Once in a Blue Moon sale with 30%-50% off floor models including bedding, dressers, lamps, chandeliers, Moses baskets (love to give Moses baskets as gifts!), window treatments, rugs and art, now through Jan. 31.

A little something for the men (and women), The Narragansett on Bowen’s Wharf (3 Bowen’s Wharf) is hosting their annual Winter Clearance Sale…my husband picked up some great Polo Ralph Lauren pieces there during their last sale. Includes 50-70% off on Paul & Shark, Geiger, Viyella, Rainforest, Max Mara, Faconnable and more. (Polo Ralph Lauren sweater pictured may not be available)

Happy shopping!

Tease-y Does It…

I can’t vouch for the new musical Burlesque starring Cher and Christina Aguilera, set to be released this Wednesday (though I venture it must be better than the infamous Mariah Carey massacre, Glitter), but I can

Rising Star

confirm that the film hits a high note with over the top styling, including jewelry by Rhode Island’s own Cheap Wholesale Jewelry (no, seriously, that’s the company’s name … the Ocean State is the jewelry capital of the U.S., after all). Inspired by the movie, OPI nail lacquers has released a Burlesque line featuring a dozen shades of red, rust and shimmers in warm metallics, available at Ki-Ra Salon. Manicure mavens who already addicted to OPI‘s vampy varnish can vouch for the fab names of shades, and the Burlesque line doesn’t disappoint: Rising Star, Glow Up Already!, Take the Stage, The Show Must Go On, Sparkle-icious, Bring on the Bling, and my favorite, Tease-y Does It, to name a few. A selection of Burlesque OPI nail lacquers are available at Ki-Ra in Newport (and the glittery shades are perfect for holiday parties).

Salon Merry-Go-Round

Someone one once told me there are more than 75 salons on Aquidneck Island, and while I’m not going to pull out the ‘ol phone book and count ’em one by one, I’m inclined to believe it. Truth is, there’s a lot of great talent–stylists, colorists, nail technicians, estheticians–packed into this corner of the world, and in the past few weeks, there have been a number of relocations and new salons to open their doors. Here’s a round up:

RaNew Salon celebrates its Grand Opening today at 580 Thames Street in Newport in Wellington Square. The salon is led by a handful of staff formerly of Ki-Ra Salon (which remains open at 6 West Marlborough Street) including Rachael Prendergast, Christine Giacobbi, Bethany Kraft, Bethany Cano, Laura Philbrick, Alejandra Cornejo and Samantha Smaldone. 619-4848,

Spalon opened at 770 Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown in October and is owned by April Ducker and Donna Morrel. The full-service salon and spa provides hair coloring and styling, skin treatments, hair removal, nail treatments, Reiki treatments and more. 842-0100,

WaveLengths Salon & Spa is celebrating their relocation from memorial Boulevard to 181 Bellevue Avenue in Bellevue Shopping Center in Newport. 849-4427,

Rainy Day Deals & Steals

The silver lining of a rainy day? No guilt in abandoning the beach for bargains! Plenty of local shops are starting their summer sales now to make room for fall arrivals. Start with a jolt of caffeine from Café Bellevue (111 Bellevue Avenue), a hidden java gem known for good service, better coffee and fair prices (give in to that urge for fresh pastry—it’s worth every calorie!). Just about a block away, designer denim hotspot Laura Jean just launched a Hudson Jeans promotion. With a purchase of any pair of hot Hollywood-worthy Hudsons, get a pair of the brand’s classic Reilly 5-pocket flair jeans for half-off (Reilly original price: $165, Now: $82.50; while supplies last).

Down on Thames Street, Banana Republic (124 Thames Street) is hosting a Warm Up to Summer event, offering an additional 25% off all your full-priced purchases from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. (you’ll have to say you saw the offer on Andrea’s NewportStylephile blog!). While perusing the racks, Ki-ra Salon will be on-hand to give mini massages, samples and make-up touch ups. Note: this offer is only available at the Newport location.

Nearby, Brooks Brothers Country Club store (139 Swinburne Row ) is

Dapper in Brooks Brothers seersucker

offering up to 60% off selected items including light men’s sweaters, women’s sweaters, women’s dresses (super cute!) and perennial Newport classic: SEERSUCKER! Perfect for that summer wedding or a night out wandering Bowen’s Wharf, this light, ubiquitous look has been hot in Newport since the turn of the century for men and today is embraced by women as well.

Finally, Newport’s J. Crew on the Harbor (45 Long Wharf Mall) has already slashed prices on select items, but through tomorrow (July 22), just mention the code EXTRA20 at check out for an additional 20% off sale items!
