Even the heartiest New Englander groans at forecasts that include word like “arctic” and “frigid,” and with more than 30″ of fallen snow in Newport this season, a mid-winter getaway is sounding just about heavenly. No fashion line is more bright and sunny than Lilly Pulitzer, and the following sneak peek at the Spring 2013 collection will inspire warm thoughts for the promise of spring. Labels for Less Opens in Middletown

Is that Lilly Pulitzer? On clearance? It was instead, Ann Taylor, but it was equally lovely and a bargain at $10. I found this little dirt cheap gem at the newly opened Labels for Less in Middletown (next to Custom House Coffee on Aquidneck Avenue). The shop (formerly known at Sportswear, etc.)  relocated from Portsmouth and has some great staples (khakis for him, comfy sweats, t-shirts, jeans) from brands including Ralph Lauren, J. Jill, Eddie Bauer, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, Woolrich and more.

Considering the forecast, the women’s water resistant New Englander Rain Jacket by Charles River (at right) might come in handy for just $49.99 (x-small—3XL), and it comes in toddler and youth sizes as well for $29.99.

Loved the men’s flat front (thank God!) Ralph Lauren Polo Chino in khaki, stone and navy (sz. 34-42) for just $28 and the men’s Woolrich 3x dry cotton dobby long-sleeve shirt (water repellent, quick dry, stain resistant…virtually indestructible) for $29.99. Prices are already low, and right now you’ll find steeper discounts as part of the end of summer clearance!

Labels for Less is located at 796 Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown. “Like” their Facebook page for updates on sales and new inventory.

All About Angela Moore’s 12th Annual Fashion Show & Champagne Breakfast

Last Thursday, in the throes of the Campbell’s Tennis Hall of Fame Championships, Angela Moore hosted her 12th Annual Fashion Show & Champagne Breakfast. The buzz was already at record levels with Andre Agassi‘s and Peachy Kellmeyer‘s pending inductions, but the biggest fashion show in its history added to the high spirits.

As the bubbly flowed, unabashedly preppy and signature City-by-the-Sea looks for men, women and children strutted the runway, all reflecting the theme of this year’s show, “Summer Fashions … Newport Style!”  Three sets were presented: Daytime Dazzle, Fun in the Sun and Moonlight Magic (evening wear).

The event grossed more than  $30,000 in proceeds that will go towards maintaining and enhancing the International Tennis Hall of Fame, bringing the total raised through the Angela Moore fashion shows to over $250,000. Without further adieu, here’s some great shots from the show (see even more photos after the jump)!

Lilly Pulitzer + Gosling’s Dark ‘n Stormy: A Refreshingly Fashionable Pair

I have a sneaking suspicion that over the course of the holiday weekend, the Dark ‘n Stormys were flowing at local watering holes including the Clarke Cooke House, @ The Deck, The Black Pearl and many more—made with Gosling’s Black Seal Rum (recipe below). It may be Bermuda’s National Drink, but the cocktail is one of Newport’s favorites, which is why when the brand partnered with Lilly Pulitzer for a custom-designed print featured on pieces in the Summer 2011 collection, the two seemed like a match made in heaven.

The collection includes Lilly’s original shift dress with embroidered embellishments, a pair of short shorts (3” inseam), an a-line skirt, and a killer tote (that flew off shelves super quick to the point where they’re now considered a rare find). Select pieces available at Newport’s Island Outfitters. Also, if you like Lilly, you’ll love the Angela Moore Fashion Show & Champagne Breakfast on Thursday morning–click here for the skinny!

Cheers!

Are you ready for the Angela Moore Fashion Show & Champagne Breakfast?

It wouldn’t be summer in Newport without raising a glass of bubbly at the Angela Moore Fashion Show and Champagne Breakfast at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Taking place July 7th from 8:30 a.m. – 11 a.m., the much-loved morning of fashion, fun and philanthropy celebrates the best of Newport summer style with looks from Lilly Pulitzer, Manuel Canovas, Christopher Blue, Julie Brown and Jack Rogers, paired with Dolce Vita shoes, Moyna bags, Onigo hats, Angela Moore jewelry and more.

This year’s show, which features a mix of swimwear, cocktail dresses, sassy separates, plus colorful accessories, beaded sandals, must-have bags and wraps, will include 2011 Tennis Hall of Fame inductee Peachy Kellmeyer, nationally-known tennis commentator Bud Collins and other ATP World Tour stars competing in the championships. Rhode Island locals will recognize models including Miss Rhode Island 2009 Ashley Bickford, NBC 10 sports anchor Frank Carpano, Newport Mayor Steve Waluk and other well-known Newporters.

Tickets are $80 and include the seated fashion show, champagne breakfast, full day of viewing courtside tennis, a $15 Angela Moore gift certificate and a Swarovski surprise. As always, proceeds from the event will benefit the International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum

Ophelia’s Wardrobe Partners With StyleWeek Providence for a Fashion Forward Fête

Since Child & Family unveiled the inaugural Ophelia’s Wardrobe fundraiser in 2007, fashionistas throughout Newport, Boston and beyond have marked the chic event on their must-do calendar. The social service agency, which earns the distinction of being the oldest in Newport County, reaches out every other year to stylish socialites throughout the area asking them to open their closet doors and donate from their personal wardrobe for a two-day sale in one of Newport’s mansions. Racks stocked with names including Gucci, Givenchy, Yves St. Laurent, Chanel, Lilly Pulitzer, Tory Burch and more form a fashionable store with amazing prices—all to benefit the amazing work and programs for girls and young women by Child & Family. Case in point: in 2009, I picked up a stunning, floor-length Armani coat for $90. Oh, and did I mention the rows and rows of shoes and handbags?!?

This year’s Ophelia’s Wardrobe is right around the corner, June 10-11, 2011. In addition to the stylish pieces, select clothing from the personal collection of late heiress Doris Duke (Guy Laroche, Valentino, YSL, Bill Blass, etc.) will be featured.

For the first time ever, Ophelia’s Wardrobe has partnered with the talented team behind StyleWeek Providence. At the Opening Night Preview and Cocktail Party, gala-goers will take in a runway show and be able to custom order original pieces from StyleWeek designers Andrea Valentini, Avni Trivedi, Jessica Abernethy, Jennifer Greeke, Jonathan Joseph Peters and Samuel Vartan while dining on hors d’oeuvres and sipping cocktails from the open bar. Tickets start at $100, click here for details.

The public is invited to shop on Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Ophelia’s Wardrobe will unfold at Ochre Court on the Salve Regina University campus in Newport, located at 100 Ochre Point Avenue. For more information, visit Child & Family by clicking here.

Save the Best For Last: Party at Polo for a Cause

This Saturday, the polo ponies of Portsmouth will make their final appearance before bidding adieu to another amazing season. Tailgaters, as always, are welcome to set up their spread well before the 4 p.m. match start, and, despite summer’s official last day tomorrow, madras and Lilly are expected to make a distinguished presence Saturday.

While it’s a delight mixing mojitos and tapas or planning an impressive wine and cheese pairing, consider letting someone else play host for the afternoon, all for a good cause. Earlier this summer, Newport Stylephile arranged a clothing drive for the Rhode Island chapter of Dress for Success, the national non-profit that provides interview suits, confidence boosts, and career development to low-income women. Saturday, local supporters of the organization will be hosting a polo tailgate party fundraiser. Your $20 ticket includes the match (and parking), catering by Glorious Affairs, and wine and beer donated by local vendors and vineyards, plus a raffle. All proceeds go to Dress for Success RI, and tickets MUST be purchased in advance to benefit the charity. Call 401-864-4657 or email lhickox@investorgps.com for tickets.
