Hey Jude…
Last spring, I spotted a dress at Michael Hayes that I loved AND looked as comfortable as it felt. I investigated the label and it was new to me—Jude Connally. Just a few months later, I complimented a friend at an event in Newport on her colorful and covetable ensemble. “Thanks, it’s Jude Connally,” she revealed. There and then, I knew I needed to get the skinny on this line.
Eponymously named for founder Jude Connally Zimmerman, an FIT grad with more than two decades in the fashion biz under her belt, the line of dresses and tops ranging from $148-$178 is described as “a modern collective of vibrant prints and soft silhouettes that makes every day dressing for women easy, expressive and fun.”
Apart from its bright, modern prints, I love Jude Connally’s versatile fabric that’s internationally chosen to wash and wear (if you’re a fan of J. McLaughlin, the fabric feels similar), plus it’s universally flattering. Also, the line is manufactured in Manhattan, right in the heart of it all. In Newport, you can find Jude Connally at Michael Hayes, plus more that 400 specialty boutiques nationwide (at shops that carry somewhat similar line including Lilly Pulitzer and Tory Burch). Check it out:

Wanna Get Away?
Even the heartiest New Englander groans at forecasts that include word like “arctic” and “frigid,” and with more than 30″ of fallen snow in Newport this season, a mid-winter getaway is sounding just about heavenly. No fashion line is more bright and sunny than Lilly Pulitzer, and the following sneak peek at the Spring 2013 collection will inspire warm thoughts for the promise of spring. Pieces from the collection will be arriving at Island Outfitters soon, and with JetBlue’s new daily service to sunny Florida from T.F. Green, you can have that piña colada with the sand between your toes in a snap!

Newport Flower Show: A Fashionable Fete
The Newport Flower Show Opening Night Party, the ceremonial kick off to Newport’s robust social season, unfolds this Friday evening at Rosecliff. Traditionally the festive al fresco fête draws a spirited crowd dressed in their summertime finery—expect plenty of seersucker and Nantucket reds for him, Lilly Pulitzer (pictured above) and Milly for her, and plenty of head-turning looks in-between. This year’s theme: Salsa! A Celebration of Latin Cultures, should also tempt partygoers to don their most colorful and vibrant duds like this floral number from White House Black Market:
Bold colors like this Laundry by Shelli Segal ‘Monaco Sunset’ Pleated Halter Gown (find Shelli Segal at Michael Hayes):
And crisp whites like this Alexia Admor jacquard dress from Sunya (perfect for statement shoes and a fabulous fascinator!)

April Showers Bring Lilly Flowers
Lilly Pulitzer will never go out of style, but in Newport and Palm Beach, perhaps more than anywhere else, it’s a brand that’s embraced, synonymous with our City-by-the-Sea living. Launched by Lilly when she was just 21, the line of simple silhouetted colorful dresses was lovely, and though refreshingly vibrant, it wasn’t until Lilly’s schoolmate, a budding fashion icon by the name of Jacqueline Kennedy was photographed wearing a Lilly that the brand skyrocketed to national recognition.
Though still pumping out simple, classic (read: covetable) sheaths, Lilly’s entered the 21st century with much have accessories including smartphone covers, tablet covers and a stationary suite I plan to let bloom in my office this spring .
There’s also a full line of entertaining accessories like durable plates, napkins, koozies (at top) and wine glass tags (cheers!), tumblers and serving pieces (acrylic and melamine, respectively, for practical outdoor use), most all of which can be found at Chace N’Lulu and online). ‘They’re just perfect for languishing on Second Beach on a sun-soaked summer day, or on a picnic cruise through Newport Harbor. Clink, clink!

Labels for Less Opens in Middletown
Is that Lilly Pulitzer? On clearance? It was instead, Ann Taylor, but it was equally lovely and a bargain at $10. I found this little dirt cheap gem at the newly opened Labels for Less in Middletown (next to Custom House Coffee on Aquidneck Avenue). The shop (formerly known at Sportswear, etc.) relocated from Portsmouth
and has some great staples (khakis for him, comfy sweats, t-shirts, jeans) from brands including Ralph Lauren, J. Jill, Eddie Bauer, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, Woolrich and more.
Considering the forecast, the women’s water resistant New Englander Rain Jacket by Charles River (at right) might come in handy for just $49.99 (x-small—3XL), and it comes in toddler and youth sizes as well for $29.99.
Loved the men’s flat front (thank God!) Ralph Lauren Polo Chino in khaki, stone and navy (sz. 34-42) for just $28 and the men’s Woolrich 3x dry cotton dobby long-sleeve shirt (water repellent, quick dry, stain resistant…virtually indestructible) for $29.99. Prices are already low, and right now you’ll find steeper discounts as part of the end of summer clearance!
Labels for Less is located at 796 Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown. “Like” their Facebook page for updates on sales and new inventory.
