Five Fun & Feminine DIY Halloween Costumes

There are a ton of Halloween parties on the calendar Saturday night in Newport so why not dress up to get in the spirit with a easy, fun costume?

1. Suzy Bishop in Wes Anderson’s film “Moonrise Kingdom,” shot here in Newport: Pink dress, Peter Pan collar, white knee socks, binoculars, small vintage suitcase.

2. Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s: Black dress, statement necklace, sparkly brooch for hair chignon, cigarette holder.

3. Betty, Joan, or Peggy from Mad Men: Go to Closet Revival on Broadway- they can make this happen in a snap! Consider a headpiece as well! The same concept works for a 4. Stepford Wife costume- a great group costume!

5. Rosie the Riveter: Blue oxford shirt, jeans, red handkerchief, red lipstick, small wrench.

It’s a “Mad” Mad World…

If you haven’t been keeping up with the Newport Winter Festival, grown ups may want to make note of tonight’s Samuel Adams Beer Dinner at The Mooring (reservations required, 401-846-2260) and the 11th Annual Martini Contest at Newport Grand.

Funny how a drink holds a certain panache, a signature swagger. The Cosmo clearly has the fictional Carrie Bradshaw and her gaggle of galpals to tank for making the ubiquitous pink potion the official cocktail of Girls Night Out, and while the martini has never really gone out of style, we have Mad Men’s Don and Betty Draper to thank for it’s soaring popularity. (Frankly, Betty is being blamed, in the best of ways, for a lot of trends recently, including full, flirty skirts paired with belted waists, and coifed, flipped ‘dos. Wanna get the Portsmouth’s own Cynthia Bogart of TheDailyBasics.com got the fashion scoop from Janie Bryant, the costume designer behind Mad Men. CLICK HERE to read the story).

I must confess, I have Christie’s to thank for reuniting me with the legendary libation. Five dollar martinis seven days a week? It’s no wonder I finally broke down. Their gateway martini was the bevy of fresh and fruity concoctions, but one evening the bartender convinced me to try a standard, shaken not stirred, Beefeater gin martini with a twist, and it was lovely.

They continue to make a great martini, and I adore a Fifth Element gin martini,  and espresso renditions from Asterisk, the Clarke Cooke House and the Brick Alley Pub. But we’ll have to wait to tonight to see who Newport thinks does it best…

StyleWeek Providence Presents Jennifer Greeke’s Harpy & Kelly Eident’s I’m Your Present

dress by Harpy

On Thursday night, StyleWeek Providence‘s fifth day of fashion, designer Jennifer Greeke debuted Harpy, a collection of feminine pieces with vintage subtleties (a la Mad Men) punctuated by modern styling. The Gloucester, Mass., native is a Parsons School of Design (BFA) alum with a MFA from NYU’s Tisch Design for Stage and Film was a costume designer in the Big Apple, so it’s no surprise there’s a certain dramatic whimsy to each look. Well-fitted cigarette trousers paired with a tailored button down; wide leg pants with reverse illusion suspenders; a long sleeve, body-hugging, gunmetal gray metallic cocktail mini-dress (decidedly 21st century)…classic style with an unexpected twist. I’m coveting the black full skirt with a fitted waist replete with crinoline as shown on The Rhode Show this morning. PS: Kudos to the details, including cage veils, great make-upplus edgy shoes and accessories that offered a finished, polished look. PPS: I love that Greeke donned an old school pair of checkered Vans for her final bow—classic!

RISD’s own and Providence local Kelly Eident presented her sophomore showing at  StyleWeek of her I’m Your Present collection, which is sold in boutiques all over the world and has been worn by sassy songstress Katy Perry and “Scenequeen” Audrey Kitching. The line was a natural complement to Greeke’s Harpy as it also evoked a vintage flair. For example, capes, ruffles and bows peppered the collection throughout. But arguably the most refreshing element of the collection was that many looks were paired with an equally stunning, bow-tie clad male model. Enough words; enjoy the images from night five.
