The October issue of The Bay Magazine, on newsstands now, features my cover story on fall fashion. I was delighted to highlight some fantastic local shop owners on what they see rising as the hottest fall trends. I’ll be sharing these in the coming days. For the complete story, pick up The Bay this month or CLICK HERE.
First up is one of Newport’s (and beyond) most loved boutiques: The Pink Pineapple. By Andrea E. McHugh | Photo above by Force 4 Photography
Pink Pineapple, with locations in Wakefield and Newport, has a cult-like following. Their Instagram account alone (@pinkpineappleshop) has nearly 27,000 followers, if that’s any indication. With a well-considered collection of cashmere, casual tops and bottoms, cocktail dresses and accessories, one might feel like you’re walking into your dream closet at the stores.
While a stalwart for preppy and nautical looks in the summer, The Pink Pineapple hits its stride this time of year. “We are obsessed with the fall color combos; they’re beautiful,” gushes Kristin May, manager and buyer for The Pink Pineapple. Kristin points to emerald green and cranberry tones as some of the strongest. The shop has already seen their stock of off-the-shoulder tops fly off the shelves, perhaps because the look perfectly complements the transitional temperatures throughout New
England this time of year. And there’s another reason: “They are really flattering on pretty much every body type,” she adds. Another well-received top there is one with a halter neckline and ultra-feminine scallop hemmed sides. As it gets cooler, Kristin says the nearly knee-length chunky sweaters return, this time with embedded paisley patterns and in subtle color combinations like camel and charcoal.
When dressing up, Kristin says one trend will absolutely be hot: long sleeves. “And bell sleeves are going to be huge!” When it comes to accessories, Kristin has already seen high demand for one of the season’s most talked about trends: chokers. “We predicted it was going to happen so we stocked up this summer and people are going so crazy; it’s unbelievable. That is going to be the ‘it’ necklace.” The trend was also hot in the ‘90s but the updated version is softer with a single strand around the neck and a longer piece that hangs to the décolletage to create a layered look.
Classic felt floppy hats polish off any look, and when looking for a simple but sophisticated go-to, Pink Pineapple’s signature cashmere is a girl’s best friend. “It’s a great basic,” say Kristin. “People come back again and again for it.” Paired with skinny jeans or leggings and cute booties? Congratulations; you’re the best-dressed mom at school drop off.
380 Thames Street, Newport.

Years ago, J. Crew was stocking an anchor belt that immediately caught my eye. It was the perfect accessory to complement a Newport outfit—crisp against a navy blue flirty skirt, contrasting with comfortable Nantucket reds, chic with a pair of signature white jeans or linen trousers. Before I could make it my own, it was sold out, like “sold out, sold out,” not a one to be found. A few were being price gouged on eBay, but it simply wasn’t the same, and besides, paying threefold seemed fashionably unjust.
I just spotted this fabulous Cape Knot Dock belt at Pink Pineapple and I must say, J. Crew who? Braided nautical rope, a sharp anchor buckle, an affordable $55 price point…lesson learned: don’t let this one get away.
Pink Pineapple is located in Newport and Portsmouth, Rhode Island, the Cape Knot Dock belt is also available online by clicking here. Also available in leather.
Bold and bright, preppy or poppy, graphic prints are gracing fashion finds from head to toe this spring. Taking a cue from popular prints often found for interior spaces, this wonderfully whimsical trend arrives just in time for the warmer temperatures. Play up the prints with punchy, eye-catching shoes and accessories, or jump in with both feet with a top, bottom or fabulous dress. Here are some local finds I brought to The Rhode Show this morning:
This Eleanor wrap dress in pink mod by LaRoque (above) from the Pink Pineapple (with locations in Newport and Portsmouth) is fresh and flattering with a girly ruffled collar and comfortable adjustable fit. It’s a growing line available in just 40 boutiques in the country and we’re lucky to fine LaRoque in RI. ($178)
The Arabesque skirt by SugarLips (left), also from the Pink Pineapple, features subtle nautical blue stripes that gracefully bend and swoop along an asymmetrical hemline with dramatic draping along the side. Paired with a crisp white tank and gold thong flip flops, you’ll be ready for a day in Newport! ($65)
Bow-ties have always been a bastion of good style, but now more than ever they are center stage—and perhaps no one rocks one better than stylist to the stars Brad Goreski. With a charming bamboo print, this spiffy silk bowtie from J. McLaughlin in Newport can go take you from professional to party boy. ($45)
Let’s hear it for Lil’ Rhody-made Roeho clutches! Even if this bag wasn’t the creation of two young best friends and budding designers, which makes it all the more charming (support local artisans!), I’d still have the Isabella clutch (left) on my growing “must have” list. ($70). Ps: It should come as no surprise either, that this particular bag is inspired summers in Newport. Learn more about the company by clicking here.
A whimsical interpretation of the classic trench (which, by the way, is worth its weight in gold), this pink I. Madison weatherproof, A-line light coat is perfect for spring and a steal at $37, available at Wish Newport.
Boat shoes are the unofficial causal uniform in Newport, and these Seashore Two-Eye boat shoes by Sebago from Active Sole in Newport feature durable canvas uppers so they’re pretty and practical ($79).
The J. McLaughlin Aken tote is roomy enough for a laptop and just about everything else and flexible with soft nylon fabric and the leather straps with attractive, gold latch hardware. ($98)
I can report that the Kristina Richards Annual Blow-out Sale is worth a trip to the trendy Washington Square boutique where you’ll find up to 75% off. Instead of sale racks being in the center of the store per a usual KR sale, the whole store is marked down. I’m talking $350+ dresses by Shoshanna, Milly and more for $75, spotted some tops for $25 (which I’ll be going back for today), jeans from DL 1961, Rich & Skinny, Seven and J Brand, and pieces from Alice + Olivia (pictured above), T-bags (so soft!), Splendid, Ella Moss (rarely seen on sale), Free People, Bailey 44 and more (wear something easy to change in and out of because you might set up camp in the dressing room)! PS: Check out some of the amazing shoes and bikinis on sale too!
If you’re looking for some inspiration to keep that New Year’s Resolution going, stop into Potter & Co. where you’ll find a lot of great pieces with big markdowns that are perfect for yoga, Pilates, running, snowboarding and all outdoor pursuits. Speaking of performance gear, Patagonia on Thames has some of their signature pieces marked 40%-60% off.
Looking for a little posh and polished looks for the little ones? Mimi’s for Kids on Touro Street near Bellevue has slashed prices that are just too cute for your pint-sized fashionistas.
J. McLaughlin on Bellevue also has some killer sales on pieces you can wear all year long. Nearby, Wish is marking down tons of designer duds by Chloe, Tahari, Tory Burch, BCBG, and Rib & Rhein has a great blend of sale pieces and new arrivals.
At Pink Pineapple, buy 1 get 1 50% off all jewelry in the Newport store only as well as a huge blow-out sale with 50% off clothing (check out the new spring arrivals too!) The Portsmouth Pink Pineapple, meanwhile, is loaded with all new resort and spring clothing! Speaking of Portsmouth, Stalise is honoring President’s Day by inviting shoppers to take an extra 25% off sale merchandise (which is already a steal). Note: they’re closed Sunday so get in today.
Tropical Gangsters on Thames Street is having their $10, $20, $30 sale where you’ll find pieces at those prices throughout the store, so stock up on your “going out” gear.
We’re closing in on the number of shopping days left before Christmas, and I don’t want to make any sweeping gender generalizations here (men!), but if you’re still looking for a stylish gift for a lady friend, check out these snazzy driving loafers. Designed by Newport’s own Stacie Hall, owner of the Pink Pineapple and mastermind behind her own clothing and accessory lines, these women’s loafers are as pretty as they are practical. Similar styles are made by Gucci (avg. $575) and Tod’s (avg. $495), but unless you’re looking to spend hundreds and hundreds of smackaroos, these are a sweet deal at just $118.
Hardware choices include a classic gold or bamboo horsebit across the top and available colors include: pale orange, orange, navy, black, brown, beige, purple, light pink, cobalt blue and light blue. (Reliable sources say a mens version may be in the works!) Available at Island Outfitters on Newport’s lower Thames Street and online here.
