We might be ready to raise the winter white flag, but this season is taking no prisoners. So while the cold temperature and seemingly endless snowstorms have their way, we may as well look fabulous as events like the Newport Winter Festival remind us that every snowy cloud has a silver lining! Here’s some winter survival fashion finds that might some in handy as you head to the Ice bar at Polar Pineapples and other festive happenings! Here’s what I brought to The Rhode Show this morning (segment clip will be posted later today). Also, I’m wearing designer Jude Connally, a New Jersey based-designer whose piece are available at Michael Hayes and are made in the USA!

Throughout the weeks leading up to Christmas, I’ll be shining the local shopping spotlight on fabulous local finds in and around Newport that may just be the perfect gift for that impossible shop for person. Today I am kicking off the season by highlighting something I wouldn’t mind finding under my own tree…an Irish sweater. Here’s the thing: the Irish sweater has come a long way. As a second generation Irish girl, I’ve been wrapped in these sometimes itchy, always cream-colored winter staples since a wee lass, but today’s Irish sweaters can be pure luxe.
Around town you’ll find some great Irish sweaters at Ireland Calls (naturally), Potter & Co., Chace N’ Lulu and Monelle. Some of these shops carry the line Fisherman Out of Ireland, which in full disclosure, I have a soft spot for because they’re made in Donegal, Ireland, where one of my grandparents are from. But here’s the thing: Fisherman Out of Ireland makes some awesome sweaters, wraps, hats and accessories. Because the pieces are fine quality, they’re not inexpensive, but they’re the kind of pieces that last for ages and are classic additions to your wardrobe. Here’s a Fisherman Out of Ireland knit hat for $58 from Monelle (across from Clarke Cooke House):
Oh, and did you know you can enjoy a complimentary glass of wine at the Clarke Cooke House with a receipt that shows you shopped at a Bannister’s Wharf shop? Tell me that doesn’t sweeten the local shopping deal?! I’m also loving this Irish sweater cape from Potter & Co.:
Studies have shown that there is a direct link between what people wear to workout and how they perform. It’s no wonder: when you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, you’re more inclined to do your best. Whether you’re kickboxing or downward dogging, performance wear that wicks moisture while being comfortable is key.
I’m loving the yoga clothing and gear by Kira Grace recently introduced at Potter & Co. in Newport. The line of tops, tanks, pants, capris, leggings and jackets are designed and tested by yoginis for yoginis. The line was created to “lift your spirit at the touch, feel or at a glance.”
With creative cut-outs and a whimsical twist on traditional design, the line is equally fashionable and functional. I’m not sure if Kira Grace is included in the sale, but right now through July 28, Potter & Co. is having a mid-summer clearance sale, so you can pick up some fabulous workout apparel, swimsuits, flips flops and more at a great price.
Potter & Co. is located at 172 Thames Street in Newport.
America’s First Resort, (that’s Newport, if you weren’t aware), knows a thing or two about patriotic displays. Here’s how local shops are feting the fourth.
HAPPY 4TH of JULY!
Free-thinking fabric, unisex appeal, affordable prices, and some come in threes…what’s not to love about Stance socks? Nothing, if you ask Chafee Emory and her super stoked staff at Potter & Co. With completely original designs created by emerging artists, the look is bold and brave, and favorite among well-known surfers, snowboarders, and skaters (some are padded and Coolmax technology). I love that the colorful styles make the perfect little unexpected punch when peeking out above a calf-high boot or underneath jeans or trousers. Lengths vary from ankle, to calf, to knee, and price ranges generally from $10-$20.
