Action! Fall Fashion on the Silver Screen Highlighted in RI Style Magazine

Challenge: Pair local looks from Rhode Island boutiques with the fashion found in this fall’s film line up.

When my editor in Portland assigned the piece back in July, I quickly started researching  fall movies with eye-catching wardrobes. After all, as the opener says, Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Diane Keaton in Annie Hall, Kate Winslet in Titanic—in some of the biggest blockbusters of all time, the fashion has been as memorable (and in some cases, iconic) as the movie itself. You can get a better look at the issue by liking its Facebook page here, or picking it up on  newsstands, but here’s the abridged version:

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo A metallic jacquard bustier dress by Tibi from ZuZu’s Petals (Cranston & Providence)

Footloose I’m sure the remake is great, but for this one I channeled the original, choosing a bold, one shoulder Amber dress by Kara Janx from Chace N’Lulu, Newport (ps:  now through Sunday, all dresses are 30% off at Chace N’ Lulu!)

Higher Ground For film adaptation of Carolyn S. Briggs’ autobiography, I picked an Aryn K. studded sleeve Ikat maxi dress from Queen of Hearts (Providence)

I Don’t Know How She Does It So it wasn’t exactly the blockbuster the studio was hoping for, but for the mommy-meets-mogul character, it’s all about this ruffled shirt dress with a sexy slit from White House Black Market (Cranston)

Wanderlust For this power couple meets flower power pic, the clear choice was global tunics from Rib & Rhein, Newport

D.S.Dundee Debuts in Newport

What a glorious Indian summer weekend Newport and much of the East Coast is enjoying! Even though fingers are crossed the perfect weather lasts, fall is around the corner, and some amazing pieces I’m finding around town makes the season transition exciting. Erin and Thomas Ribeiro at Rib & Rhein are ecstatic about welcoming exclusive London-based luxury design-driven menswear line D.S.Dundee. The designer is known for using the best fabrics—corduroy, Aran knits, tartan—on classic pieces. It’s not inexpensive, but D.S.Dundee produces the kind of investment pieces that will be timeless. “It’s just simply fabulous and we have it before it gets really huge,” Thomas tells me. If you’re going by the William Street shop, check out the ticket pocket jacket in the window—its fine!

Rib & Rhein is located at 86 William Street in  Newport, (401) 619-5767

Ophelia’s Wardrobe Partners With StyleWeek Providence for a Fashion Forward Fête

Since Child & Family unveiled the inaugural Ophelia’s Wardrobe fundraiser in 2007, fashionistas throughout Newport, Boston and beyond have marked the chic event on their must-do calendar. The social service agency, which earns the distinction of being the oldest in Newport County, reaches out every other year to stylish socialites throughout the area asking them to open their closet doors and donate from their personal wardrobe for a two-day sale in one of Newport’s mansions. Racks stocked with names including Gucci, Givenchy, Yves St. Laurent, Chanel, Lilly Pulitzer, Tory Burch and more form a fashionable store with amazing prices—all to benefit the amazing work and programs for girls and young women by Child & Family. Case in point: in 2009, I picked up a stunning, floor-length Armani coat for $90. Oh, and did I mention the rows and rows of shoes and handbags?!?

This year’s Ophelia’s Wardrobe is right around the corner, June 10-11, 2011. In addition to the stylish pieces, select clothing from the personal collection of late heiress Doris Duke (Guy Laroche, Valentino, YSL, Bill Blass, etc.) will be featured.

For the first time ever, Ophelia’s Wardrobe has partnered with the talented team behind StyleWeek Providence. At the Opening Night Preview and Cocktail Party, gala-goers will take in a runway show and be able to custom order original pieces from StyleWeek designers Andrea Valentini, Avni Trivedi, Jessica Abernethy, Jennifer Greeke, Jonathan Joseph Peters and Samuel Vartan while dining on hors d’oeuvres and sipping cocktails from the open bar. Tickets start at $100, click here for details.

The public is invited to shop on Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Ophelia’s Wardrobe will unfold at Ochre Court on the Salve Regina University campus in Newport, located at 100 Ochre Point Avenue. For more information, visit Child & Family by clicking here.

Get Your Stroll On

The sun’s scheduled to be stunning, the shops are ready to shine and Newport is open for business. Tomorrow’s Spring Stroll, taking place along Bellevue Avenue and William Street, welcomes the season with grand openings, in-store promotions, refreshments and nibbles from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lisa Sarro Fitzpatrick, co-owner of Wish, the much-loved upscale consignment boutique, says the brand new William Street location is stunning and stocked with designer duds and fabulous shoes. Marcela Calvet’s eponymous luxe handbag boutique will officially open its doors at 59 Bellevue (here’s the story I broke on her arrival), and while you’re down in that end of the neighborhood, be sure to stop in the gourmet trio of La Maison de Coco, Le Petit Gourmet and the Newport Wine Cellar.

On the opposite end of Bellevue, but sure to pop by Sequin and the newly opened Sara Campbell (I got the scoop first on her foray into Newport-here’s the skinny), Twig, and across Memorial Boulevard, the shops on the Casino Block are ready to rock. Papers and Lulubelle’s will be welcoming strollers, as will J. McLaughlin, which is hosting a Sip & Shop event to benefit the American Cancer Society (15% of your purchase will be donated to the ACS). Denim doyenne Laura Jean will be serving refreshments and offering free chair massages by massage therapist Julie Basil Pierce, and The Linen Shop has a great sale and fresh linens for spring.

Head down William Street where you’ll find the aforementioned Wish, plus It’s My Party Bake Shoppe and the fabulous Rib & Rhein. At Wag Nation, your fashionable four-legged friends will be doted over and as I suspect, showered with treats. Look for the balloons for shops participating in the stroll.

Hometown Holidays: Shaken, Not Stirred

There’s a reason the martini has been one of the most popular cocktails since supposedly being created at New York’s Knickerbocker Hotel in 1911. Whether it’s a sweet and sassy cosmo or sophisticatedly served straight up, there’s an air of serious cool when sipping one of these concoctions. I love these amber crystal martini glasses ($12/each) I found at Rib & Rhein (shown above with coordinating champagne flutes, same price). In fact, the hip William Street boutique proved to be a treasure trove of chic finds

For him, I was loving the hand-sewn Italian silk ties (a number of diverse styles and patterns, $75)—they had a decidedly Don Draper feel. For her, there were some super soft one size fits all leggings in fun patterns like cheetah, zebra and houndstooth ($35) and of course in solids like black, charcoal and chocolate brown ($25). They’d look great with the Lola & Sophie Overdrape Jersey ($85/available in scoop or v-neck, charcoal or black)  which, with its drape and ruching, is super flattering, plus you get some bang for your buck as it can be worn year-round.

Glamour gals will ove the Isabella necklace, a stunning statement piece made in India ($125). Ever so stylish Erin Ribeiro  (the “Rib” in Rib & Rhein) suggests sporting this necklace in a casual ensemble, like a white dress shirt, to lunch or work, or at night to dramatize evening attire. Another amazing piece I spotted there was the The Plaza Wrap, a one of a kind wool and cashmere blend wrap from India boasting a floral screen print and hand embroidered beading and sequins. Happy shopping!

DON’T FORGET: This afternoon’s Hometown Holidays Drawing is at 4 p.m. outside Active Sole on Bowen’s Wharf. Some lucky local shopper will walk away with a $1000 American Express gift card (need not be present to win).
