In Newport, retailers are pushing winter fashion out the door (and we still have at least 8 more weeks of chilly temps) for pennies. Michael Hayes on Bellevue Avenue and on Bowen’s Wharf has women’s clothing an ADDITIONAL 20% off already marked down winter duds (50-75% off already), and the upstairs men’s boutique has suits, sport shirts, jackets, outerwear and more for 30-75% off. Michael Hayes for Kids on Bellevue is taking a cue and offering the same additional 20% off clearance. Karol Richardson’s annual Warehouse Sale is happening now through Sunday (10 a.m. – 6 p.m.) with designer duds 50-90% off (including $10 bargain bins). Angela Moore on Bellevue Avenue has 80% off selected styles, and a few shops down, J. Downon Lower Thames, Erica Zap on hosting a 40% sale on winter items, but they may close by 4 p.m. today in advance of the Super Bowl!

Starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, gallery owner and jewelry designer Jessica Hagen-Hill will be hosting a trunk show featuring vintage-inspired jewelry made especially for the Newport Historical Society. There’s no fee to attend and the show runs until 7 p.m. at the Museum of Newport History at Brick Market at the foot of Washington Square. Seventeen-year-old Portsmouth High School senior, Lauren Mailloux, will be turning the school’s gymnasium into Bryant Park next Tuesday, April 6th at 7 p.m. Featuring spring frocks from several chic shops and boutiques across Aquidneck Island including Karma, Pink Pineapple,Water Brothers, Stalise, Viking Tuxedo, and Just for You, Lauren is also tapping talent closer to home. Designs by classmates and independent designers, including RISD-bound student Hannah Reed and Portsmouth junior Audrey Rinkel, will sashay down the runway.
More than just Lauren’s senior project, the show will be an integral part of raising funds for the senior prom. Thinking big, she secured major sponsorships from Glaceau (Vitamin Water) and Sephora, and promises a visual adventure with spring-inspired décor, a diverse casting of models and an eclectic soundtrack.
General admission is $10.00, $5.00 for students. Tickets available the night of the show (subject to availability).
For a lot of revelers, there’s no place in the world they would rather ring in 2010 than right here in Newport and Bristol Counties. While some prefer to be cuddled up with a loved one watching Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve (especially tempting in the current frigid temperatures), others look to tear up the dance floor at one of many area hotspots. For the ladies, getting glam on New Year’s and making an entrance is a must do, and a sequin dress or flashy top, metallic camisole or cashmere comfort, all make great options.
