We might be ready to raise the winter white flag, but this season is taking no prisoners. So while the cold temperature and seemingly endless snowstorms have their way, we may as well look fabulous as events like the Newport Winter Festival remind us that every snowy cloud has a silver lining! Here’s some winter survival fashion finds that might some in handy as you head to the Ice bar at Polar Pineapples and other festive happenings! Here’s what I brought to The Rhode Show this morning (segment clip will be posted later today). Also, I’m wearing designer Jude Connally, a New Jersey based-designer whose piece are available at Michael Hayes and are made in the USA!

What is being dubbed Newport’s fashion event of the summer is coming this Saturday and fashionistas across the region are anxiously awaiting the chance to don their best duds the oceanside fete. Au Courant: An Evening Too Marvelous for Words, unfolds at Ochre Court and will feature eight of New England’s top fashion designers, including Jonathan Joseph Peters, Avni Trviedi, Jessica Abernethy sending their head-turning Resort Collections looks down the runway. While sipping cocktail amid the backdrop of the sea, attendees will be able to see the looks up close and buy directly from the designers. The event, organized by the stellar team behind StyleWeek (Providence/Northeast and Miami), benefits Child & Family. “StyleWeek is thrilled to partner once again with Child & Family for Au Courant,” says StyleWeek founder (and all around amazing gal!) Rosanna Ortiz Sinel. “Newport can expect to see progressive, creative and talented collections on the runway as well as have a personal experience with the designers who have so perfectly made StyleWeek what it is today. We are elated to share this experience with Newport, where art and culture is part of its foundation.”
Child & Family’s Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Keith Tavares, agrees, adding, “Whenever you put the City of Newport together with fashion and style in order to create a social event to benefit families in need, the outcome is bound to be a big success.” For tickets and information, call 401-848-4150 or visit www.childandfamilyri.com.
Local retailers are toasting the event by hosting Style Night Newport on Friday, June 29th (5-8pm) along Bellevue Avenue. Shoppers check in at International Tennis Hall of Fame for a map and get the 411 on special offers (many boutiques will be offering discounts/promotions and refreshments!). The Hotel Viking is the last stop on the fashion trek where shoppers can unwind with refreshments and enter to win Au Courant tickets. April showers bring…fabulous finds! Overcast skies won’t stop the Spring Stroll along Bellevue Avenue, William and Mill streets today from 11am-5pm. Start off with a hot coffee and croissant from Le Petit Gourmet, pick up a bottle of red or white at the Newport Wine Cellar for tonight, treat yourself to something sweet at la Masion do Coco, then make your way along “the Avenue” for some shopping!
Keep an eye out for participating retailers marked by balloons and take advantage special stroll promotions including:
- 20% off at Wish
- free gift from Sequin when you spend $35
- 75% off all sale merchandise at Michael Hayes (TONS of fabulous deals!)
- 25% of up to 3 items (non-edibles only), and treat tasting from the Fruitables treat for canines that stroll and sparkling drinks for their humans at Wag Nation
- Sales on already reduced merchandise at Talbots
- J.McLaughlin will be donating 15% of all purchases to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation
- Amazing pieces at Sara Campbell
Bold and bright, preppy or poppy, graphic prints are gracing fashion finds from head to toe this spring. Taking a cue from popular prints often found for interior spaces, this wonderfully whimsical trend arrives just in time for the warmer temperatures. Play up the prints with punchy, eye-catching shoes and accessories, or jump in with both feet with a top, bottom or fabulous dress. Here are some local finds I brought to The Rhode Show this morning:
This Eleanor wrap dress in pink mod by LaRoque (above) from the Pink Pineapple (with locations in Newport and Portsmouth) is fresh and flattering with a girly ruffled collar and comfortable adjustable fit. It’s a growing line available in just 40 boutiques in the country and we’re lucky to fine LaRoque in RI. ($178)
The Arabesque skirt by SugarLips (left), also from the Pink Pineapple, features subtle nautical blue stripes that gracefully bend and swoop along an asymmetrical hemline with dramatic draping along the side. Paired with a crisp white tank and gold thong flip flops, you’ll be ready for a day in Newport! ($65)
Bow-ties have always been a bastion of good style, but now more than ever they are center stage—and perhaps no one rocks one better than stylist to the stars Brad Goreski. With a charming bamboo print, this spiffy silk bowtie from J. McLaughlin in Newport can go take you from professional to party boy. ($45)
Let’s hear it for Lil’ Rhody-made Roeho clutches! Even if this bag wasn’t the creation of two young best friends and budding designers, which makes it all the more charming (support local artisans!), I’d still have the Isabella clutch (left) on my growing “must have” list. ($70). Ps: It should come as no surprise either, that this particular bag is inspired summers in Newport. Learn more about the company by clicking here.
A whimsical interpretation of the classic trench (which, by the way, is worth its weight in gold), this pink I. Madison weatherproof, A-line light coat is perfect for spring and a steal at $37, available at Wish Newport.
Boat shoes are the unofficial causal uniform in Newport, and these Seashore Two-Eye boat shoes by Sebago from Active Sole in Newport feature durable canvas uppers so they’re pretty and practical ($79).
The J. McLaughlin Aken tote is roomy enough for a laptop and just about everything else and flexible with soft nylon fabric and the leather straps with attractive, gold latch hardware. ($98)
I can report that the Kristina Richards Annual Blow-out Sale is worth a trip to the trendy Washington Square boutique where you’ll find up to 75% off. Instead of sale racks being in the center of the store per a usual KR sale, the whole store is marked down. I’m talking $350+ dresses by Shoshanna, Milly and more for $75, spotted some tops for $25 (which I’ll be going back for today), jeans from DL 1961, Rich & Skinny, Seven and J Brand, and pieces from Alice + Olivia (pictured above), T-bags (so soft!), Splendid, Ella Moss (rarely seen on sale), Free People, Bailey 44 and more (wear something easy to change in and out of because you might set up camp in the dressing room)! PS: Check out some of the amazing shoes and bikinis on sale too!
If you’re looking for some inspiration to keep that New Year’s Resolution going, stop into Potter & Co. where you’ll find a lot of great pieces with big markdowns that are perfect for yoga, Pilates, running, snowboarding and all outdoor pursuits. Speaking of performance gear, Patagonia on Thames has some of their signature pieces marked 40%-60% off.
Looking for a little posh and polished looks for the little ones? Mimi’s for Kids on Touro Street near Bellevue has slashed prices that are just too cute for your pint-sized fashionistas.
J. McLaughlin on Bellevue also has some killer sales on pieces you can wear all year long. Nearby, Wish is marking down tons of designer duds by Chloe, Tahari, Tory Burch, BCBG, and Rib & Rhein has a great blend of sale pieces and new arrivals.
At Pink Pineapple, buy 1 get 1 50% off all jewelry in the Newport store only as well as a huge blow-out sale with 50% off clothing (check out the new spring arrivals too!) The Portsmouth Pink Pineapple, meanwhile, is loaded with all new resort and spring clothing! Speaking of Portsmouth, Stalise is honoring President’s Day by inviting shoppers to take an extra 25% off sale merchandise (which is already a steal). Note: they’re closed Sunday so get in today.
Tropical Gangsters on Thames Street is having their $10, $20, $30 sale where you’ll find pieces at those prices throughout the store, so stock up on your “going out” gear.
This is an amazing time of year for frugal fashionistas as many weeks of winter lie ahead (well, winter has been subjective so far, if you consider there hasn’t even been need for a heavy coat this weekend…) and prices are being slashed left and right to make room for spring merchandise. I popped into J. McLaughin to check out their sale (you’ll find up to 75% off a nice selection of pieces) and while there, a watched a customer spent less than $250 on more than $700 woth of merchandise! The best part is, a lot of J. McL offers timeless patterns and lightweight but durable fabrics, rendering them wearable throughout the year. That means your CPW (cost per wear, fasionistas) will be off the charts! Though a decidedly winter look, you can channel your inner Rachel Zoe with their totally fauxbulous “fur” vest. Paired with strech pants, riding pants or a skinny jean, it’s a fun (but cruelty-free!) piece. Also loving the new arrival of printed Aken totes (seen in the above illustration)—a carry all that is a J. McL staple and is roomy enough for a laptop and just about everything else (tip: the shop will be happy to have it sent out and monogrammed for you for just an additional $20). The nylon fabric is long-lasting and the leather straps boast attractive, gold latch hardware (and feet, to help the bag stand and stay sturdy).
