Tonight at Wish in Newport, jewelry designer and local Newporter Katie Whittemore hosts a trunk show from 6-8pm.
Crafting pieces made from vintage materials including antique pins, pendants, beads and various discovered treasures, Katie reworks her finds into modern, fresh designs. “The colors I gravitate towards are bright and vibrant so just perfect for spring. I’ve always loved costume jewelry – the bigger the better! – and have always loved creating my own one-of-a-kind pieces using vintage beads which have such a great richness and history to them,” says the talented designer.
Some of the rare, unique materials Katie uses from around the globe include, for example, Czech beads from the 1920’s and Hindu glass wedding bangles — pieces that merge the past with the present while celebrating individual style.
See you tonight at Wish!
Wish, an upscale consignment shop, is located at 106 William Street in Newport, (401) 848-0202
The sun’s scheduled to be stunning, the shops are ready to shine and Newport is open for business. Tomorrow’s Spring Stroll, taking place along Bellevue Avenue and William Street, welcomes the season with grand openings, in-store promotions, refreshments and nibbles from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lisa Sarro Fitzpatrick, co-owner of Wish, the much-loved upscale consignment boutique, says the brand new William Street location is stunning and stocked with designer duds and fabulous shoes. Marcela Calvet’s eponymous luxe handbag boutique will officially open its doors at 59 Bellevue (here’s the story I broke on her arrival), and while you’re down in that end of the neighborhood, be sure to stop in the gourmet trio of La Maison de Coco, Le Petit Gourmet and the Newport Wine Cellar.
On the opposite end of Bellevue, but sure to pop by Sequin and the newly opened Sara Campbell (I got the scoop first on her foray into Newport-here’s the skinny), Twig, and across Memorial Boulevard, the shops on the Casino Block are ready to rock. Papers and Lulubelle’s will be welcoming strollers, as will J. McLaughlin, which is hosting a Sip & Shop event to benefit the American Cancer Society (15% of your purchase will be donated to the ACS). Denim doyenne Laura Jean will be serving refreshments and offering free chair massages by massage therapist Julie Basil Pierce, and The Linen Shop has a great sale and fresh linens for spring.
Head down William Street where you’ll find the aforementioned Wish, plus It’s My Party Bake Shoppe and the fabulous Rib & Rhein. At Wag Nation, your fashionable four-legged friends will be doted over and as I suspect, showered with treats. Look for the balloons for shops participating in the stroll.
The 50% off rack at Chace N’Lulu on America’s Cup Avenue continues to grow, and while yesterday’s sun-soaked afternoon spread spring fever throughout Newport, there’s plenty of time to get use out of these warmer clearance pieces. If spring break and warmer temperatures are all you can think of, you’re in luck as the shop is hosting a store-wide sale through the weekend, offering 20% off the entire store PLUS sale items that are already marked down.
The Pink Pineapple just launched The Pink Pick 3 Giveaway, a fun social media promotion. Here’s how it works: Pick your favorite 3 Pink Pineapple items by clicking here or by popping in the stores in Newport or Portsmouth, then post them on the Pink Pineapple’s Facebook page. The winner will be picked at random on March 31st. Good luck!
It’s BOGO time for the boys at Michael Hayes on Bellevue…now through Sunday, buy one, get one free on sport coats, sport shirts, sweaters and trousers. Downstairs, ladies can take advantage of 75% off all clearance items. Sales are final but fabulous.
It’s a Wish come true as the girls prepare to make the move from Lower Thames to the corner of Bellevue and William Street. Super chic pieces in the shop are not already on super sale, but the shop is offering an extra 20% off the lowest sale price (there’s a ton of $10 to $30 tops, skirts, dresses, jeans, jackets and more).
If you’re a Facebook fan of Deborah Winthrop Lingerie, get any sale item at 50% off the original price (if you’re not, it’s 10%, 20% or 30%, so fan them today by clicking here). The Clock Tower Square shop is stocked with Wacoal colored bras, lingerie, pjs, panties, and discontinued SPANX—included in the sale.
Lastly, I posted this same deal Thursday, but as a reminder, visit the Newport Stylephile Facebook page (www.facebook.com/newport.stylephile) where you’ll find a 30% off coupon to use at Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy today through Sunday, March 20th. (It’s a friend page, so just send a friend request if you’re not a friend yet and we’ll confirm ASAP and you’ll be on your way to save! We’ll be moving to a fan page in the future). Best of all, when you use the coupon, the company will donate 5% to the World Wildlife Fund, the leading organization in wildlife conservation and endangered species.

With Monday’s observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Newporters are looking forward to the 3-day weekend which may include sledding, ice skating on Lily Pond or at the Skating Center, or toasting our winter wonderland with a piping hot Irish Coffee (would love to know YOUR favorite Irish Coffee around town). Fresh of the Christmas holiday rush, area retailers are anxious to move inventory to make room for spring (oh, doesn’t spring sound fabulous right now?) Here’s the scoop:
Wish (664 Thames Street) is slashing prices with 20%, 30% and 50% of select styles, and they have a ton of labels to tout: Marc Jacobs, DVF, Burberry, Free People, Prada, and Coach as well as designer denim as low as $25! Sale is today through Sunday…
The Linen Shop (196 Bellevue Avenue): There’s just something about starting off the new year with fresh linens…and here’s great news. THE ENTIRE SHOP is 20% off and there’s a special sale table with goods marked down up to 70%. If you’ve never been, you should stop by there, just to take in the history of it’s location and get a sense of what fine linens are all about. Owner Meg McGuire is always a gracious host and knows just about everything there is to know about bath and linen lines. Here you’ll find pieces by Abyss, Matouk, Yves Delorme and more.
Michael Hayes (202 Bellevue Avenue and 19 Bowen’s Wharf) Designer Sale is in full swing with, and I love this, 20% off already marked down clearance goods.
Cottage & Garden (9 Bridge Street) is putting all topiaries on sale tomorrow (Saturday), so here’s your chance to welcome a little living, breathing freshness to your home.
Banana Republic in Washington Square (124 Thames Street) has a lot of great items on sale. Let me just tell you—I stopped in last night just to see if there might be a piece for me to wear this coming Monday in The Rhode Show (I’ll be dishing on my Golden Globes best dressed and hot messes!) and was torn between two great dresses. I bring them both to the register (including the one pictured here). The silk v-neck drape dress in grey was originally $150, had been marked down to $129, then $109, then $79, then $54.99. THEN I spot a sign—items are AN ADDITIONAL 40% off—hello, my new $32.99 dress. Oh, and the little black number I was mulling over too? $150 to $109 to $59.99 to hanging in my closet for $35.99!!!
If you’re looking to get gorg, Ki-Ra Salon (6 West Marlborough Street) is celebrating their annual Pay It Forward Sale—bring in a bag of non-perishables or personal hygiene products and receive 30% off all services (over $15) and all retail products (some restrictions apply), now through February 12…
Mommies take note: Infant Interiors (8 Freebody Street, # 1) by lovely cover girl Roselle McConnell is having their Once in a Blue Moon sale with 30%-50% off floor models including bedding, dressers, lamps, chandeliers, Moses baskets (love to give Moses baskets as gifts!), window treatments, rugs and art, now through Jan. 31.
A little something for the men (and women), The Narragansett on Bowen’s Wharf (3 Bowen’s Wharf) is hosting their annual Winter Clearance Sale…my husband picked up some great Polo Ralph Lauren pieces there during their last sale. Includes 50-70% off on Paul & Shark, Geiger, Viyella, Rainforest, Max Mara, Faconnable and more. (Polo Ralph Lauren sweater pictured may not be available)
With less than a week ‘til All Hallow’s Eve, the race is on to fashion a fun costume for the festivities, most of which are scheduled to take place this coming Saturday night (see below for the 411 on Newport bashes). There’s a ton of places to get some costume inspiration, starting with the colorful wigs, make-up, Red Cherry lashes and accessories spotted at Cosmetic Cosmos (and a whole new shipment arrived today!). The best part is the skilled make-up artists down there take the how-to out of the equation by getting you as glamorous or ghoulish as you like (and anyone who’s ever wrestled with eyelash glue will tell you, it’s a pleasure to have someone else do the heavy lifting). Call 842-0666 to make an appointment~
Of course, funky frocks can be found at Closet Revival (fab vintage finds — Mad Men, anyone? Betty Draper would make a beautiful costume!) and don’t forget the Salvation Army shop at 76 Broadway for bargain basement duds. I found my costume last year at Wish, which must have brought me some luck when I won the costume contest at Christie’s! And for fans of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, The Great Gatsby or just your average Joe and Jane Roarin’ 20s, Vintage to Vogue, fresh off their move from Broadway to Lower Thames, reports a ton of 20s flapper-style dresses (a la Kim Kardashian and Lauren Conrad, pictured at left) in stock, plus accessories including long cigarette holders, vintage jewelery and feather-festooned headpieces. For the guys, don a 20s, 30s or 40s-inspired hat, and Vintage to Vogue has a handful of costumes for little ones.

In the fashion world, fall is on the brain, and two shops in Newport are hosting designers and reps (even an author) to showcase their fall collections and latest offerings. This Friday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Angela Moore will be hosting a Jack Rogers and Lilla P trunk show at her charming Bellevue Avenue boutique. The classic line from apparel and shoe designer Jack Rogers will include platforms, jellies (they’re back) and espadrilles, which you may have seen in In Style magazine. Classic style is also palpable in the designs of Lilla P, with pieces direct from the designer’s Meatpacking district design studio in NYC. The brand has been praised for their modern take on the iconic cotton tee shirt, including the Origami shirt that ties 10 ways as seen on Good Morning America. The shop is also hosting a book signing featuring Karen Weinreb, the author of the book The Summer Kitchen, who has planted roots in Newport. Marie Claire called her most recent release is “an irresistible beach read!” And there’s plenty of summer left to sink your toes in the sand and unwind with a good read. You may recall Weinreb’s appearance on Oprah in January, where she shared her story of her husband’s secret life. Champagne and treats, served during show hours, promise to sweeten the experience.
Down on Lower Thames, hot young designer Elise Fargnoli brings her Francesca Joy line of stunning, hand-painted totes, wristlets, chemises and more to Wish on Friday and Saturday, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The St. Michael’s Country Day School grad and Providence native has made a splash on the Palm Beach shopping scene and brings her artistic flair to her beloved City-by-the-Sea for two days of fashionable fun.

It was an absoulte delight to be a part of The Rhode Show this morning to chat about spring looks for less found right here in Newport. I’m fielding a lot of questions about the looks, so here’s a breakdown:
Look #1 on model Carolyn Van Petten (pictured above) from Karma: Chanel-inspired vintage yellow dress with matching jacket from B. Altman—legendary store Fifth Avenue in NYC—with hand beaded collar. Impeccable craftsmanship, would retail for hundreds, this one from Karma is $175 (seen with vintage-inspired pearl bracelet for $25).
Look #2 on model Lauren O’Hanley from Wish: Halter dress by TIBI that retails for more than $250 for $100. Paired with Michael Kors “Santorini” Straw Tote, retails for $348.00, at Wish for $125 (hello, bargain!)
Look #3 on model Kerry Tanner from Closet Revival: Beaded top from Ann Taylor, retails for more than $70, at Closet Revival for $45; and jeans by 7 For All Mankind, retails for around $200, at Closet Revival for $45. Black leather heels by Nina, retails for $89, at Closet Revival for $25. And those awesome bracelets were by Jessica Kagan Cushman, retails for $115-$130/each, at Closet Revival for $48/piece. Kerry’s Hype bag, retails for $150-$200, at Closet Revival for $95.
Look #4 on model Jillian Bekke from Karma by Carmen Marc Valvo, would retail for more than $500, at Karma for $200!
Though the name Newport can conjure up visions of hefty price tags (we were, after all, the playground of America’s wealthiest families throughout the Gilded Age), it’s clear that area retailers can get you a gorgeous look for less! To view the segment in its entirety, CLICK HERE.
**Special thanks to the models and shops that participated!
