Bellevue Avenue Sidewalk Sale and Helly Hansen Promises Weekend Bargains

There’s a lot of excitement building for the Bellevue Avenue Sidewalk Sale, which kicks off tomorrow and lasts through the weekend. More than two dozen retailers, galleries and restaurants/eateries along Bellevue (including the Audrain Building) in addition to William Street and Bellevue Gardens businesses will be participating—keep an eye out for the balloons at the entrances welcoming you in. Look for familiar favorites offering great discounts (The Linen Shop, Talbots, Angela Moore, The Tennis Store, Michael Hayes, Wish, William Vareika Fine Arts and more) and new names as well (Mimi’s for Kids, Sara Campbell, Venetucci Home, Calvet Paris 1937)–and those are just a few. Running a little low on energy? Pop into Annie’s, Le Petit Gourmet, the Hotel Viking or It’s My Party for shopping sustenance.

Want to start the celebrating on Sidewalk Sale eve? Toast the arrival of J. McLaughlin’s sailboat to Newport Harbor by attending tonight’s Sip & Save at the Bellevue Avenue shop. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. you can sip cocktails, meet the boat’s skipper Ryan Finn and take advantage of some sweet markdowns. 15% of all proceeds will benefit Newport Hospital.

Also, this weekend is the annual Helly Hansen Warehouse Sale in Newport. This Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to midnight, save up to 75% on footwear, foul weather gear, snowboarding jackets, snow sports gear, boating attire, base layer and H/H’s signature fleece for men, women and children. This year the sale moves to the Newport Yachting Center in the heart of downtown.

And if you’re a lucky ticket holder for the Wynton Marsalis concert Friday night, don’t forget the Newport Jazz Festival Opening Night Cocktail Party on the Horseshoe Piazza at the International Tennis Hall of Fame from 6:30pm – 7:45pm. Enjoy great music, food and drink before the big show. Tennis Hall of Fame Members: $40;
Non-Members: $50. Party includes open bar and hors d’oeuvres. Call (401) 324-4072 for tickets.

Get Your Stroll On

The sun’s scheduled to be stunning, the shops are ready to shine and Newport is open for business. Tomorrow’s Spring Stroll, taking place along Bellevue Avenue and William Street, welcomes the season with grand openings, in-store promotions, refreshments and nibbles from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lisa Sarro Fitzpatrick, co-owner of Wish, the much-loved upscale consignment boutique, says the brand new William Street location is stunning and stocked with designer duds and fabulous shoes. Marcela Calvet’s eponymous luxe handbag boutique will officially open its doors at 59 Bellevue (here’s the story I broke on her arrival), and while you’re down in that end of the neighborhood, be sure to stop in the gourmet trio of La Maison de Coco, Le Petit Gourmet and the Newport Wine Cellar.

On the opposite end of Bellevue, but sure to pop by Sequin and the newly opened Sara Campbell (I got the scoop first on her foray into Newport-here’s the skinny), Twig, and across Memorial Boulevard, the shops on the Casino Block are ready to rock. Papers and Lulubelle’s will be welcoming strollers, as will J. McLaughlin, which is hosting a Sip & Shop event to benefit the American Cancer Society (15% of your purchase will be donated to the ACS). Denim doyenne Laura Jean will be serving refreshments and offering free chair massages by massage therapist Julie Basil Pierce, and The Linen Shop has a great sale and fresh linens for spring.

Head down William Street where you’ll find the aforementioned Wish, plus It’s My Party Bake Shoppe and the fabulous Rib & Rhein. At Wag Nation, your fashionable four-legged friends will be doted over and as I suspect, showered with treats. Look for the balloons for shops participating in the stroll.

Deals & Steals: Spring Fever Edition

The 50% off rack at Chace N’Lulu on America’s Cup Avenue continues to grow, and while yesterday’s sun-soaked afternoon spread spring fever throughout Newport, there’s plenty of time to get use out of these warmer clearance pieces. If spring break and warmer temperatures are all you can think of, you’re in luck as the shop is hosting a store-wide sale through the weekend, offering  20% off the entire store PLUS sale items that are already marked down.

The Pink Pineapple just launched The Pink Pick 3 Giveaway, a fun social media promotion. Here’s how it works: Pick your favorite 3 Pink Pineapple items by clicking here or by popping in the stores in Newport or Portsmouth, then post them on the Pink Pineapple’s Facebook page. The winner will be picked at random on March 31st. Good luck!

It’s BOGO time for the boys at Michael Hayes on Bellevue…now through Sunday, buy one, get one free on sport coats, sport shirts, sweaters and trousers. Downstairs, ladies can take advantage of 75% off all clearance items. Sales are final but fabulous.

It’s a Wish come true as the girls prepare to make the move from Lower Thames to the corner of Bellevue and William Street. Super chic pieces in the shop are not already on super sale, but the shop is offering an extra 20% off the lowest sale price (there’s a ton of $10 to $30 tops, skirts, dresses, jeans, jackets and more).

If you’re a Facebook fan of Deborah Winthrop Lingerie, get any sale item at 50% off the original price (if you’re not, it’s 10%, 20% or 30%, so fan them today by clicking here). The Clock Tower Square shop is stocked with Wacoal colored bras, lingerie, pjs, panties, and discontinued SPANX—included in the sale.

Lastly, I posted this same deal Thursday, but as a reminder, visit the Newport Stylephile Facebook page (www.facebook.com/newport.stylephile) where you’ll find a 30% off coupon to use at Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy today through Sunday, March 20th. (It’s a friend page, so just send a friend request if you’re not a friend yet and we’ll confirm ASAP and you’ll be on your way to save! We’ll be moving to a fan page in the future). Best of all, when you use the coupon, the company will donate 5% to the World Wildlife Fund, the leading organization in wildlife conservation and endangered species.

Deals & Steals: Winter Fest Edition

There are tons of sales going around the island! Lots of restaurants and retailers are offering additional discounts with a Newport Winter Festival button, click here for a complete list of discounts.

Also, Kristina Richards is having a HUGE sale this weekend. If you have any doubt, I can tell you I picked up a T-Bags tunic with a stunning beaded collar that was marked $228 for $25. There were super steals on dresses and tops by Milly, Alice + Trixie, Shoshanna, Alexis, and Monrow, plus a whole table of sale jeans by J Brand, Seven, Rich & Skinny and DL1961.

Down on Lower Thames, shoe shop Tropical Gangstilettos is offering 35% off store-wide (except for new arrivals) where I spotted platforms, flats, knee-high boots and the much-coveted over-the-knee boots. Most sale shoes and boots with the discount are under $50. At Team One Newport, everything in the store is at least 15% off (there are a few exceptions) so sailors can gear up. And at Wish, the girls are gearing up for their big move up the hill, so there are huge discounts on top of the already low fabulous consignments.

J. McLaughlin on Bellevue has slashed prices to make room for spring, but the bast part is that so many of their pieces you can wear all year long. Case in point, the silk Kara vest I scored that was originally $198 for $25 and the $195 dress for $35. (The delightful silk taffeta ballerina skirt in pink (seen above) is also on sale and it’s awesome, as are scarves, belts, toes and accessories. Great menswear is also deeply discounted, including sweaters, polos, outerwear, hats, needlepoint belts, embroidered pans and ties! Visit my Facebook page to see info on their friends and family sale tomorrow from 11-4 p.m.

“Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” -Coco Chanel

When checking out the third and final installment of the William Heydt exhibit, Newportant People, last weekend at the Newport Art Museum (on display at the through April 4th), I couldn’t help but notice the common denominator of many of Heydt’s subjects is their expression of personal style. From a cacophony of color expressed through body art to the engaging confidence across the face of local author and Newport personality Muriel Barclay de Tolly, personal style is about more than just what you wear. Yves Saint Laurent once said, “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” Fortunately, Newport and Bristol Counties affords hundreds of outlets to express your personal style, whether it’s indulging the expert tailoring of Katie Brierley’s Isoude line at her Bellevue Avenue boutique or a donning a Mad Men-inspired vintage dress from Vintage to Vogue or Closet Revival on Broadway or a timeless Chanel jacket at a virtual steal at Wish on Thames Street. Embrace your personal style and challenge yourself to try something new, who knows what new favorite things you’ll find?

Happy New Year!

In 2009 and a little before, Newport welcomed some new neighbors, including Swoon, Gossip, Wish, Just Breathe, and Alex and Ani, among others. Even better, the year ahead looks promising across Newport and Bristol Counties’ retail landscape with more new names, fresh locations and old favorites bringing shoppers the best and most diverse offerings around. Instead of making  tired resolutions that fall by the wayside in a week or two, consider a pledge to shop local as much as possible. According to Rhode Island Lt. Govenor Elizabeth Roberts, chair of the state’s Small Business Advocacy Council, a 10% shift towards local businesses has the power to grow economic output 20% and generate millions in economic activity and create hundreds of jobs. With shops, boutiques and galleries throughout Newport and Bristol Counties stocking everything from one-of-a-kind finds to name-brand favorites, shopping local is easier than ever.
